So its the first and I haven't been on the bike since mid-October. But it was the first of the year so I was going to make a fresh start and get back on the horse/bike again.

So at 3:00 this afternoon, I head off to Cumberland to get below the snowy roads and ride. I put in an hour on the bike at an average of 12.6 miles for 12.8 miles of distance. It was pretty cold, 34ish (f), but the roads were clear. I did an easier route with a few ups and downs but no real hills of any mention. I think the longest climb is 2 tenths of a mile.

A couple observations - I have completely lost all semblance of the cardio strength I had in October and that was way down from August. So I'm starting over in terms of ability to go fast and maintain a good heart rate at the same time. But interestingly, I have retained a good bit of the leg strength as the climbing was much easier than it was a year ago. That surprised me.

Regardless the first 20 minutes really sucked, the last 20 minutes felt pretty good. I got a bit of a chill by the time I was done, but overall was pretty happy to ride again. Its supposed to snow again tonight and my wife wants to do some things tomorrow. So hopefully I'll manage to find my way back out on the road again on Saturday. 12.8 miles down and 2983.2 to go in 2009.

How did your New Years ride go?

I"ve sort of already posted it but what the heck.

26 miles of predominate head winds. Wanted to do 40 but bailed out because I only wore leg warmers and my legs were very cold from the wind, and my legs were also very dead from riding into the wind.

All in all, yuck.

26 miles down, 3974 to go:eek:

Well I bailed on the club's annual New Years Day ride. I just couldn't justify driving 50 miles only to ride 12 - 15 miles. Plus the temps' were in the low teens, and I don't feel I have enough layers to keep me warm for a social ride. Yes, I'm a wimp, but at least I'm warm.
I will be jumping on the trainer soon for a 50 minute Spinervals session. Some bike time is better than no bike time I suppose.

We had 5 riders show up this morning. It was about 38 when we started with about a 5-10mph wind gusts. It was a 20 mile ride, but I dropped back so far I called it a day at 10 and headed home due to a lack of energy (see sleep apnea post). I finished with 12.87 miles. Hopefully, I can get out again tomorrow.

My ride today was a solo 26 miles, and pretty slow due to the nature of the MUP I was following... and slowing to take a lot of pics. I enjoyed it a lot and have posted the pics in a new thread.

Rode 33 solo today at an ok average of 14.2 mph (for me). Great loop, but 1800 ft. of climbing. Some downhill stretches had been sanded for early morning ice so caution was in order. New to cycling and haven't hooked up yet with other cyclists in my relatively small town, but I'm looking forward to company. 33 miles down, 3967 to go.

Happy New Year to all.

Meh. Rode into work in the dark. Worked 14 hours. Rode home in the dark. 25 miles, 4,975 to go in '09.

Although traffic was light and the ride home was fairly warm and the wind was down!!

Mindless 30 mile ride on the trainer while watching the recent Indiana Jones movie. You have to sprint in every car/motorcycle scene :D

1970 miles to go!

No miles, due to extended family not understanding that we might want to stay home/go ride bike instead of coming over to their place. Arrgh! Drove to work today, but not worried about that, in 45 minutes I'll go to the gym for an hour on my old friend the elliptical. :)

First ride of the year looks to be Saturday AM. Going to go see some gravel about it's weaknesses.

As I posted elsewhere I didn't ride yesterday. No riding today because of work and the snow showers we are getting this morning. So my first ride will be tomorrow, weather permitting. Probably I'll take an easy ride on a local trail, or one of my local loops.

My first big ride is in less than a week. I've arranged a day off from work to 'ride my age'; considering how out of shape I am, I wish I were turning 18 instead of 43.

25 miles for me. It was around 33 degrees. Couldn't feel my big toes when I was done. Nothing a hot shower couldn't cure!

I did my second ride today 1/3 and it totally sucked compared to the first ride of the year. I had a head wind going out and no tail wind coming back. Even though it was 10 degrees warmer, I had trouble warming up. I forgot to take my asthma medicine before the ride (preventive dosing) and it took a long time for my lungs to open up. But I pushed through and was glad to get another hour in on the bike.
