Foo - Pets Lost to Traffic Accidents?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Allen G's thread got me thinking about the huge numbers of animals, both wild and domestic, that die in traffic every year.
I just lost a favorite cat to a car a few months ago, it had been a number of years since the last one; all told I've lost three cats to traffic accidents over the past 20 years.
R.I.P. Spooky, Monk and Fish.
The toll on wildlife is probably even more regrettable.

When I was 5 we lost Maa. She was a pretty little cat. We tried to help her survive, but in the end it was more humane to have her put down.
She couldn't meow. She always said maa.

Lost my two cats (Missy and Ginger) in the past couple of years. Still upsets me a bit, but when they roam, as animals are apt to do it will happen. The road past my house has gone from less than 1200 cars a day 10 years ago to over 6,000 a day now. It is a narrow 2 lane road and people speed on it. We get deer, fox, racoons, dogs and cats killed on it all the time...the possums are born dead in the middle of it:D Only animal that I have seen crossing the road and not getting hit has been the guinea hens.

Ish --- the city and outlying town's deer population has built up again ---- drove out to a town I usually bicycle in - and along the 20 minute expressway ride I counted 4 deer. And that town, perhaps because it has so many roadkills, does not clean them up. Those carcasses will be there in the Spring, plus others. Have also seen a trend out there where the deer are missing the head ---- and caught a guy in a convenience store's truck - had a deer head in a bag in the back of the truck. Must be they like "cheap" wall trophies!

I lived in the path of the largest migratory deer heard in the Western U.S. Seeing that has become so commonplace to me, I barely notice it. I've struck and killed two deer and was a passenger in a vehicle that struck and killed a fawn. It's hard every single time it happens. I am saddened that my actions cause the loss of life, but at the same time, I know there was very little I could do short of risking my own life to save the animals.

I was six when this crazy lady in a vw bug hit my dog anchor. The crazy part is she stopped and my mom invited her in for a cup of coffee. wwwt. I was standing there crying while the neighbors took my dog off and buried it and the killer was sitting at my place at the table having a cuppa.

We lost our mutt "Lady" during a snowstorm. She was hit by a driver who couldn't see her, and she couldn't get out of the way. The paperboy came to our door quite shaken, as he had just seen it happen. I was about 8, and I couldn't bear to even look at her.

The former kitty, Mumu, was run over. We just found her in the middle of the street, squished, and teh bf was devastated. There was another time that I just saw a cat getting hit. The driver sped off but teh bf and I stopped and tried to rescue the grey squishy, but we were too late. I just held him in my arms as it died, and left him in the bushes where hopefully his owner would see him. Another time, we saw teh bf's neighbor's cocker spaniel get hit, and we had to rush to the neighbors to alert them. I felt SO bad. I hate seeing pets die. :(
Squished possums and skunks are a common occurrence in my neighborhood. There's been so much development here lately that the wildlife is being driven out of their homes and into the streets. They just made another expansion to the park, great, more dead possums in the bike lane.
