to v. 4.5.xxxx very nice....much easier on the eyes.....don't know what the difference is cause i cant visualize exactly what display looked like before, but the difference is like between standard text versus html display. My message formatting much nicer...

update -- just started reading about it here:

4.5 is a pretty good upgrade from 4.2, except that it was a little slower.

Dayum...figures I buy a crackberry and it is already obsolete:crash::lol:

Ok, I have the World 8830 on Verizon, where do I go to get the update? and do I really need it or should I wait a bit? FWIW I downloaded most of the Google Suite (gmail, reader, maps, and photos) and have been pretty happy with everything else. Mine is currently used to track emails, make phone calls and do some web browsing, maybe listen to the occasional mp3. Biggest reason I took the 8830 over the other available models was the World capabilities and lack of camera (many places I work will take camera cellphones away from you:( )

Are you talking about the SMS Text formating? That is the only complaint I have with my Curve. If someone is not using Blackberry Messaging (BBM) then the layout for texting sucks. BBM is amazing though.

I see the update adds
• Streaming support for YouTube and Sling Player (H)

Which is awesome as that is a nice addition.

How do I go about getting this update?

Also just curious how do I tell what version software I have now.

Thanks

As a stoopid n00b, when you do the upgrade, you dont have to reload info
do you ???

Guys,

Sorry I just got back to my computer.

To summarize the process, here is how you will update your BB to v4.5:
- download the update from your carrier's website to your PC
- plug the BB into your PC using the USB cable (bluetooth won't work for this process)
- open BB Desktop Manager and use Application Loader to install the downloaded file from your PC to your BB (it takes about 20 minutes)

The easiest way to locate the upgrade online is to Google your carrier's name + "download blackberry update." For example, I found mine by Googling "T-Mobile download blackberry update" and found this link: http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade/

For Verizon, try: http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry/download.aspx (or just call Verizon tech support and they will e-mail you a link).

Just some of the new features I have noticed:
- I know have VIDEO (bb used to only take still photos)
- the formatting of messages (text and e-mail) is much nicer
- the browser gives me an actual cursor now, like a desktop PC

PLUS, I just replaced the trackball the other day with a new one...smoooooth!

Apparently Verizon doesn't have the 4.5 for the World yet. I went to the site and they only show the 4.2 with a date of 5/30/08? No biggie...I am usually a late adopter of stuff anyway, still use friction shifters and just recently added brifters to one of my drop bar bikes:innocent:

Verizons policy is to give you a remanufactured phone when you have a problem. (they dont actually repair anything). The remanuf one had ANOTHER problem. Then I get #3.. another remanuf phone, with an entirely different problem, it think it was a bad speaker. Next phone had a blank screen after a few days. They mailed me another remanuf phone (still in the box in my office), in the meantime I raised wholly hell in the store and was finally given a NEW phone. But I'm getting a message, as of yesterday, that I can't access interenet b/c the browset needs updating.
I'm blond. I'm going back to the tin cans and string version.

FOR SALE: another BB, charger, holster and the rest of the stuff in the box!

Are you sure?

Try this link:

http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry/download.aspx?ct=personal

When I select 8330 (curve?) from menu, it responds with:

Select to download Device Software used with Desktop Manager or VZAccess Manager.

BlackBerry Device Software v4.5 (updated 10/31/2008)

Please enter your 10-digit Verizon Wireless number:

This is not something NEW I don't think; I just simply had never updated my software before, so it's new to me. I think it's been out awhile.

Oh, well....all I can suggest is call your carrier and request BlackBerry and PDA support. That was just a link I found with Google.

I think I've got the number memorized. grrr ... tech support. the store support here is MUCH worse though.
I had to, the first time they did the transfer of data I lost a lot of stuff.
I've done it myself since, I've learned that much.

and a reminder to all ... back up your cell phone lists!

I have an 8830 World Edition, dunno if the Curve version will work on it or not. Mine is the one with no camera.

Well, if you bought anything less than a Storm on VZW's network, then you definitely have been antiquated.

Yep...but I cannot have a camera phone, so the World 8830 is the best choice if I want a Blackberry. Very few if any of the bigger carriers sell a decent quality cellphone of any sort without the camera.

If you want to be hip and current...probably. If you want something with most of the bugs already worked out? No:roflmao2:

I am definitely not an early adopter in most cases. In fact I have been accused, more than once, of being a retrogrouch:p I want things to work, be repairable and durable, hence my love of C&V bikes, cars, trucks, tractors, razors, appliances...etc.

I'd upgrade for sure if it were only me and the bugs I were worried about.
But dealing with Verizon in most ANY respect is nothing short of nightmarish. (by phone and in person, ugh!)
Does having FIVE bb's tell you anything????

Sadly though, I've experienced the other carriers available to me and in 'this old house' I seem to have no service.
