Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - 300 Mile Challenge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just signed up for the ASICS Cycle 300 Miles in a Month Challenge on http://mapmyride.com.
To some of you that doesn't sound like a lot. (Those of you that regularly commute 10+ miles a day)
Considering I had only been hitting 150 miles or under each month...I think it will be a useful enticement for upping my mileage.
Anybody else up for the challenge? It's only 10 miles a day for the rest of the month.
What a way for some of us to start the year right!
:commute:
I just did an easy 10.7miles today.:)

Don't be surprised if you hit 500!:thumb:

Yea, what the heck, I'm in.
I need more than 300 a month to get my sorry *** ready for the epic ride anyway, lol.
JTGYK, we gotta figure out how to get some rides in together. I was headed your way yesterday and my legs "esploded" at Shiloh and 190, lol. Stupid wind.
Edit: OK, I'm all signed up. I'm already 9% there, woohoo.

I'm in as well. This will be challeging as we are heading to the Happiest Place on earth in a couple of weeks and the temp in these parts has been around 30 degrees. But hey, I needed some motivation to get up off my fat arse and do something.

Hmm, I could do that. All I need is to take off a week each month and tour. :)
Yep... I started Jan 1st... didn't do so great with it last month though... flu and travel... only 140 miles.
I'm wb416 on mapmyride also.

It has its good and bad points, bad being that when i ride for over 3 hours i usually get a little bit of a sunburn. Nothing that will stop me from riding the next day though.

I was just checking. In October, I did 280 miles or so, around 300 in November, over 400 in December, so I will hopefully be good for 300 in January.
Just got my ride in barely before midnight for 1-2-09. Whew! Another 10.5 miles just rambling around the neighborhood. It was really nice out...around 61-63*F...though slightly humid. Kind of miles for miles sake, but broken up by some of the better Christmas lights on the houses.
At least I'll be able to commute to/from work tomorrow. :)
CRAP!!! :eek:I just checked the weather forcast!
It's gonna be 79 freakin' degrees and sunny...and I have to work extra hours since we're short staffed right now. It'd be different if it was snowing and icy, don't like the cold at all...but to be stuck indoors...working when I'm normally off...MISSING THE GOOD STUFF???:notamused:
BOO!
HISS!
FEH!
Of course, when I'm off long enough for a Morning ride on Sunday,
the high is expected to be 46...in the afternoon ...and 20 mph wind. Of course I have to ride in the morning. (I was really looking forward to a 30 mile ride)
stupid weather!:twitchy:

Yeah, but...
300 is a good benchmark for fitness. You will feel better, look better, live longer, if you can get that time every month. I would consider committing to 300 a month indefinitely, instead of one time. If you enjoy it, like I do, like it sounds like you do, then it should not be tough to stick with it. have fun.
It will be tough for this month. But I may be able to pull it off if its not too snowy and cold (under 25ish). I'm taking care of family today (sick kid and wife) but I' supposed to head out this afternoon for a ride. SO if I get in 20+ I'll be on target for 10 miles a day.

Last Summer, I had this attempt blown because of a hard crash a month and a half before the attempt, fracturing my shoulder.
June 21, 09, I'm going to try for a 311 mile day. Anyone else interested?

I'm tempted. The drawback is PA's winter weather. It's a colder than normal winter, and a lot windier too. I doubt I'd hit a 300 mile month until March or April.

If anyone gets 300 miles in the winter months up north, you have my utmost respect and admiration.

Hey, that sounds like the Texas Time Trials- anyone that's interested, come try the 24 hour challenge. :)
I figure it's like this. The TTT are a RAAM qualifier. What that means is that a lot of the folks competing in the TTT are half-nuts. They have to weed them out, because you need to be full nuts for the RAAM.
Nice rollers man! Who makes them and what model?
I'd thought they made a lot of noise. Didn't seem too bad.
What was the learning curve on getting to where you were confident?

Had an extra person show up to work today, and she was grumbling about needing more hours!
Oddly enough....I "volunteered" to leave at 1pm. :D
My wife had brought me a nice lamb curry for lunch:love:...so afterwards, we'll go and explore some trails.
Won't be fast, but hey! Miles is miles.

LBS didn't have any, so I got them from Nashbar. I don't see them on their site right now though. Got the ones with the beveled rollers so that I could watch TV while I was riding... lol
They didn't take a _long_ time to get used to, but nonetheless, it works better if you have something on both sides of you to grab a hold of. I've moved them to the basement now and setup underneath the stairwell so that I can lean either direction without falling to the floor. Hardest part is climbing onto the rollers and bike 'cause the shoes for the clipless pedals can be "slick-ery". :)

Feeling sooooo sorry for ya jesspal.:notamused:
I know it does get humid down your way during the summer. So, you will feel my pain during the summer months as I tote around a camelbak full of water. (2 water bottles don't cut it here in July-September).

oh yeah, summer months definately require late night or early early morning rides. I usually bring a cooler with me and when i ride go in a 15 mile loops. that way i can refill the bottles with cold clean water.
I learned that lesson the hard way on a long ride once. Had to drink water out of the everglades, i didn't get sick but it didn't taste like it was poland springs.

Um..Does this have to be EVERY month?
I live in Buffalo New York (care to guess what it's like outside right now..and has been sence the 3rd week of november)
That said: I'm game (it'll give me a mark to shoot for)for the months of april thru november first.
I keep a log of my miles per day/week/month each season. Last season I was averaging 264 miles a month (with the club).
OOPS
I see this is 300 miles a day!
NEVER MIND (lol)

Arggggg. For some reason mapmyride is counting today's work out twice in the challenge log, I only have the one ride in my traiing log for today, so any one have an idea how to delete one of the duplicated rides?

When you go to "My Training Log", does it show up twice? If so, delete one of them.
If it only shows once, consider deleting that one, checking to see if the subsequent mileage was deducted, and re-enter the workout.
I've been using MapMyRide for about 6 months and had that happen a couple of times, but not sure what causes it. Had to experiment a bit both times to fix it, so YMMV. :)

Well, I have deleted both in my traiining log, but both still show up in my Challenge total. Now if I reenter it, I'll probably have three, lol

Woah, in the blog, the guy in the "Fail" video... W/O helmet, he could be dead!
Back in the day, I lived in "Northen Cincinnati", by Winton Woods--good riding there (back then, at least). Tough year for the Bengals, eh? I do think they'll bounce back strong, with Palmer back next year. Also, the defense quietly got better this year (like it could have been worse...). Have a 4-way and a cheese coney for me, extra tabasco, please.
I've only lived here 3 years (near Kings Island) ...Bengals... who are they? lol ....if I ever follow football again, the last team I'd follow would be the Bengals. :)
What part of East Florida? We've considered Jacksonville... would be nice to bike outside more comfortably in the winter than here.

Ouch! I've followed the Bengals since they began. If I could stay with them through the David Klingler years, I'll never give up. They've had their moments; I was at Riverfront for the AFC Championship over the Bills.
I live in Brevard county, between Jax and Miami, middle of nowhere, which is what makes it great. And yes, the weather is pretty sweet here right now.

Off to a good start.... 3 rides in 3 days for total of 76 miles (26%). I go back to work next week so outdoor miles will be harder to come by. Luckily my Christmas present (Kurt Kinetic Road Machine) is supposed to arrive on Monday. If everything goes according to plan, I'll be counting the indoor miles toward the 300.

Nope this is to help those of us averaging less to get up to (or over) 300 miles a month. Once you realize that it isn't too hard to do that, you can get motivated to do more.
THAT'S what it's all about.
(If you are already doing 300 mi/month set a mileage above that and shoot for it)
Mr. Stormcrow--- we look forward to you riding the PBP in the near future with Machka and Rowan. Sounds like you're nearly ready for it!
25.9 miles posted for today. Yargh! Y'all in the north have been sending yer cold air down this-a-way.
Must be some kind of EVIL yankee plot!
Temp for the ride was 37*F, but with winds gusting to 20+ mph and switching back and forth from the North to the Northwest, it was....brisk.
Did the 2 layers of socks withthe plastic bag trick over the toes, and it helped....some.
Couldn't feel my toes by the halfway point.:twitchy:
(Brrrr)
The most heartbreaking section was on a downhill that I had to pedal hard to make 10mph. (normally hit 26+ mph)
The rest of the trip north sometimes had me geared down and blazing along at 5-6mph on the flat.
YEESH!
Most of the trip south was nice. (15-27mph) one section I hit 29mph, but had to stop for a changing light.:notamused:
Then, of course the tail wind settled down as I hit the incline after the light.
I got very little help from the wind the rest of the way back as the NW wind was just enough in my face to slow me down again.
Tomorrow is supposed to have freezing rain...so I'll get to rest the legs a bit (I'm feelin' the Quads a bit at the moment!):D
