Advocacy & Safety - Question about Kryptonite NY Lock STD - sliding piece

Hi yall,

I am glad there is a place i can ask people questions. I just threw down 70 dollars on a NY LOCK STD from Kryptonite, and to my dismay and outrage, they have this silver sliding piece that slides off the damn lock every time you open to lock your bike. Thing is, i dropped that silver sliding piece three times the first day that I bough the lock and eventually lost it completely the second day.

I am concerned that now that i have lost that silver piece the protection capacity of the lock has been reduced. Is my bike easier to steal now? I am so infuriated that Kryptonite would make a lock with a stupid piece that falls off every time you want to lock up. How inconvenient!

i will call them tomorrow, but nevertheless, it is a stupid idea. thanks for the responses!

Check your lock packaging for information on what the piece is.

Seems like it has nothing to do with lock security but may be to keep the lock from rattling in the transportation bracket. Just a guess.

The only piece on a NY lock that could fall off is part of the frame mounting hardware. It has no bearing on the security/locking ability of the lock. I throw that thing away soon as I can anyway.

The lock is as safe as when you bought it.

A little glue can work wonders... That's the little clip so that you can carry the lock on the frame mount.

Glue? It's held in place with a small hex head screw.

The MOUNTING BRACKET has a small hex screw with which you can tighten it down, just like Ziemas said.

Probably, but that behavior has been on the decline since 1987 when it was included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. There remain some sects in what RTFM is accepted as normal behavior, but breeding patterns make their long-term survival highly questionable.

i did read the manual. It does mention that the piece may be used to be mounted on your bike, but it doesnt rule out that the piece plays a role in safety. I became curious because the metal rod that it goes over gets thinner when the piece it removes. The piece also covers a spot where the "u" meets the lock part of the NY STD. Whats up with the attitude man?

Nightswings, this is Kryptonite writing back. Sorry for being offline for a bit. The other posters are correct that the spline (sliding piece) doesn't affect the security of your lock. It is used to attach your lock to the carrying bracket. It is deliberately left loosely attached to the end of the shackle leg so you can adjust to work best with the orientation of the mounting bracket wherever you decide to put it on your bike frame. The instructions that come with the lock explain how to tighten this with a hex wrench.

Uh - I keep my Krypto in a gap in my rack. I took that piece off right away. The little mud guard broke off fairly soon after I got the lock as well. I've learned to regularly put lube in the lock so it doesn't sieze up.
