hello all,

I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm in upstate NY and want to get back into bicycling. I've not ridden for over a year, basically. I used to ride quite a bit and was in much better shape (and much happier) for it.

I just moved near a great bike path (currently covered in ice and snow and probably will be through the winter). Further out, there are great road rides. I plan on commuting to work (about 6 miles direct, more if I use the bike path) when the weather is better, and I am also wanting to do some bike touring this summer.

I've been lurking for a while, you all seem to be a great group with lots of expertise and great humor. This seems to be a safe place to ask some of my newbie-ish questions. I'll post later today on my 'wanting a new bike' question.

I look forward to becoming a more active member here.

Oh, I'm around 185:(, and want to ditch at least 30 lbs of that this year.

Phredette

Yeah you should be able to do that (and more), especially once you start commuting those six miles. I lost about 45 lbs commuting seven miles each way (14 RT) over a span of a year without any diet changes. Of course I rode like I had a purpose, so that would make a difference too. :D

Welcome. :D

Well, I do happen to be debt free, but it's Fred-ette ;).

Thanks, all for the warm welcome!

I sit corrected.
(I say sit instead of stand because..... well because I am sitting.)

It is nice to have a little more estrogen flowing around here. It smells much nicer.

Welcome Phredette! Have you started commuting yet? It's addicting and it really helped me loose the weight.

I beg to differ, dear lady. Given any member of the female persuasion and say, for example, myself, I would wager that she will consistenly smell, and look, better than I at the end of a long hard ride.

Well, she would to me anyway...

Welcome. I'm not able to hang around here as often as I used to, but this is still teh best part of BF!

I'll start commuting when it is no longer snowing every other day and when I get a bike worthy of commuting. Maybe because of the economy, snow plowing/removal is abysmal this year.

I have lost 8 lbs by snowshoeing, though. But now I'm sitting in the Orlando airport awaiting a flight to Albuquerque.

Noted in your other thread what your ride is, nice. I am using my Specialized Ruby Pro for commuting. I had to swap out the nice CF seatpost for alloy, then I could use a quick-release beam rack with a side frame for panniers. It wouldn't have sufficient capacity for touring but it is able to hold 15# -- enough to carry clothes, toiletries, lunch to work. My workplace is in a gated secure compound so I can keep a cable & lock on their bikerack and not worry about the bike components getting stripped while I'm at my desk.

I use my "utility bike" for when weather conditions are worse, when I need more carrying capacity, or when I worry about somebody messing with the bike while it's locked up somewhere. It is not as much fun to ride as Ruby.
