Foo - any experience with HSBC?

I have been with Citibank since I moved here from Long Island. There are no branches for 100 miles in any direction so I have done all my banking online and via mail.

Today I found out that they intend to charge me a fee to send me deposit slips in the mail (more than postage). They had never done this before and I think it's a lousy thing to do. I could just grab as many as I want if there was a branch nearby and I think it is a bad move to charge people to deposit in your bank. I am also not liking some other policy changes they have made, especially outsourcing their phone support.

So I am considering moving to a bank that has branches in the area. The larger ones (that have decent online systems) are HSBC and M&T Bank. Any experience with them?

Yeah Citibank sucks. No experience with HSBC but I think they were damaged significantly by the subprime mortgage crisis. So, maybe they too will screw customers to make up for loses.

Make up your own deposit slips.

Or, check to see if you can depoit online. My bank (USAA) accepts deposits that way. I scan in the checks and upload them and they process like mail in or walk in. Obviously can't do cash that way.

HSBC stock price has gone down as well, but they moved with the market as a whole. Citi stock price went down a lot more in terms of percentages.

HSBC sucks *ss! Unfortunately... I am stuck with a couple accounts with them until... the end of time. They are horrible.

If you travel abroad a lot HSBC has very good international service and doesn't charge international service fees which can be insane.

I got rid of them when I got back to the states though. They're nothing special here.

That really shouldn't matter. I've been with NFCU for 25+ years, and have been without a local branch since 1989. Not a problem - and they don't screw me over for routine things. Have since joined another Credit Union - another good experience.

My wife had an auto loan through HSBC. After we paid it off, they failed to report it to the credit bureau making her score exceptionally low. It took me about a month to get it straightened out and I work at the dealership where she traded it in at. I can't imagine how long it would have taken had that not been the case.

I have an HSBC credit card. My only problem with that has been what they define as the "due date". I had a discussion with David from HSBC a few months back on the definition of the term "today" and "due date". If I chose to make an online payment at 5 pm Eastern Time on the day before the "due date", its not really today, or even tomorrow for that matter, but two days from now, according to HSBC, thereby making the payment late. I had to take my lumps and pay the $15 "Rush Payment" fee in order to avoid the $39 "Late Fee" and the inevitable and dreaded Default Rate. I have not made that mistake again and now everyone seems to be happy.

So far, our best accounts have always been at credit unions. Better rates and better service.

HSBC? They had a call center here in Orlando, wifey worked there for a while. Good benefits, nice coworkers (those chicks were hawt!). But they moved the call center to another state (can't remember where). It probably sucks now... who knows.

HSBC was good when I was in Hong Kong. Probably more differentiated by local culture than company culture since it is international.
