my chainwheel is getting pretty worn. is it a good/bad idea to flip it to extend its life?

Well, if you are tight on money, you could always recycle it with your cans. I do that with alot of alum. bike parts. I am a dork = (part of my anti-denial process)

how would that save me money? id just have to go buy a new chainring for more money i dont have!

Oh geez, it wouldn't save you money, silly. However, if you HAD to buy a new one because that one's toast, it would help toward the purchase.
