Advocacy & Safety - I got a police escort today :-)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

There is a narrow, twisty, scary, high traffic, half-mile section of road I have to ride thru when leaving or returning to my house. Today, while riding thru I was passed by a highway patrol. Right after passing me, he turned on his strobe lights (but not the siren) and continued on driving at about 30 mph until he was out of sight. I noticed that oncoming traffic was going slower than usual because of this.
Thank you, whoever you are.
at first i thought it was gonna be about ya cycling drunk. :D

Thats pretty cool. I had one of those a few months ago commuting to work on a bridge under construction w/ only one narrow lane. Typically drivers always think of it as perfectly safe to pass me slowly within 6 inches of my shoulders even though the road surface was all chopped up for a new concrete deck. Anyway as I approached it and looked over my shoulder a cop waved me in ahead of him and the pace line went over the bridge at a nice 10-15 mph. I did'nt get the lights though :)

Sweet! The only time I've gotten police escorts was during sketchy sections of traffic on big organised rides.

I got a police escort out of a bar once.
I've had police escort me through a long red light before when no cars were around at the intersection.
Heh your subject line reminds me of homer simpson, "I thought the cop was a prostitute!"

Yow!
If your commute still includes that narrow one-lane bridge, can I humbly suggest you take the lane through that stretch rather than let cars squeeze past on your left? Then the car directly following you gets to play the role of de facto police escort. (Willingly or unwillingly. And in the latter case, they're not someone you would want passing you on a narrow bridge anyway.)
Enjoy the ride,

And everyone had to slow down to 30 or less for you.
Now that's what I'm talkin' bout.

Know quite a few cops that ride bikes.
Always give a police car a wave when they pass you, you might need 'em someday.
Busted a rim on our tandem 3 miles from home and wife and I started walking. Cop came by and offered to give us a lift. Told him tandem would not fit in his squad car. He then offered to give me a ride home where I picked up our motor vehicle and went back to pick up spouse and tandem.
Yes, there's still nice folks in this crazy world!
