Living Car Free - Your mileage last year

We usually ask everyone each year how far they traveled by bike last year.

I totaled mine up this morning and came up with 4442 miles, up about 500 from last year. I think I did more traveling in rain/snow this year due to better gear. However, I think I did less recreational riding for some reason. Probably because the surrounding country-side was flooded for much of the spring and summer.

IMO, the point of this thread isn't only to brag about how many miles you did (although it's certainly OK to be proud of any accomplishment there). Another purpose of the thread is to give people who are considering a switch to carfree/lite some idea of how many miles you might be riding if you adopt this lifestyle.

My bike mileage was over 4000 miles, even though I didn't ride from October 30 until the end of the year.

I did about 5200 miles by interurban bus, with a monthly visit to my dad in Traverse City. A rough estimate of city bus mileage would be 600 miles--almost all of it in November and December, when I couldn't cycle. I probably walked about 400 miles all year. I drove around 100 miles or less all year.

My distance on the bicycle was around 5,000 kilometres in 2008, down from 2007 only because I didn't do as much touring. My distance driving a car was also around 5,000 kilometres.

Another purpose of the thread is to give people who are considering a switch to carfree/lite some idea of how many miles you might be riding if you adopt this lifestyle.

Another point might be to talk about the health advantages. My 4400 miles put in a very good humor. I feel in better shape now than at any time in my life (even though I'm 55). I sleep well. I eat like a horse.

Although I am very cranky if I can't get out....

'bout the usual...1,200 miles by bike possibly a bit more or a bit less. No cyclometer, computer or odometer on any of my regularly ridden bikes:p Truck? around 21,000 with about 4,000 of that being personal miles. Amtrak 1,950. Air miles ~3,000. Obviously I need to work on the bike and Amtrak mileage.:(

I have my hopes for next year, company asked if I would mind spending a year plus in the Richmond, VA area...nope they gots Amtrak! and if I grovel, piss and moan I can probably get an apartment close enough to the job site to be able to commute by bike:D

I missed three months of riding due to an injury and managed to eke out about 10,000 km 6300 miles.

The year before that I rode 16,000 km as I had a longer commute, did a lot more recreational riding, and did not miss any time.

2009 should be another high mileage year.

I took Amtrak to Colorado for my cycling vacation, so add about 3,000 Amtrak miles. Doing it again this coming summer.

I did about 4500 miles (7200km) this year, which was about the same as the year before; I started touring this year, but the added mileage was mostly canceled out by the fact that I walked almost exclusively in November and December; it was partly road conditions, mostly just a desire to change the pace for a while. I flew about 6,000 miles (there goes my carbon footprint), bused about 200, and drove/rode maybe 200 in cars. I probably sailed about 160 miles, too... :)

This year, I'm fairly certain that my bike mileage will go up; I've discovered that I really like touring, and if I can't manage to do a tour in Spain this summer, I'm going to ride from Seattle to SF and back, which is about 1600 mi round trip.

A smidge over 6000 miles. Alot of goofing around since my commute is only 20 rt. Lost close to 100lbs, very happy and can still pack food away and still lose weight! Best decision I've made in years...

Unfortunately I put more miles in an airplane to go on said bike vacation than I biked all year. But there was also meeting a cute bikey boy involved in the process so it was all worthwhile :)

So I guess the transport methods I used this year in order from highest mileage to lowest mileage would be:
Plane, Bicycle, Intercity Bus, Carpool, Train, Walking, Local Transit (mostly a couple snow days so I think walking will win)

I got no idea how many miles, I know I had a bad crash, rode about 5 miles home, am now feeling like I could get back in the saddle as soon as the ice melts. Being car-free is just a dream for me, out of my control.

Probably about 1500 miles... I don't use a bike computer, so if I forget to keep an eye on the weekly mileage, I lose track. Most months tho I seemed to be doing about what I did last year, which added up to somewhere in the 1000-1500 mile range. Walking, no idea. I'm more likely to walk if we're going out on a date, or if I want to listen to music or read while I travel. I'm a lot less likely to walk if I need to do a giant grocery stockup binge.

Very few train miles this year... I had a brief stint on the Boston subway, and I think that's it.

Plane was the usual 2 trips to visit my parents.

Bus... lots more than I like. Hurting my knee meant I went all bus early this year, and I probably won't be riding until there's a real thaw and I'm back up to walking 5-7 miles at a stretch.

Dang, I missed you last year. I started in a ended in Denver. This year will be the 50+ Forum ride in Glenwood Springs. I'm going to start a few days early in Grand Junction, and tour my way back to GSC.

i logged in 6763.81 thats up about 6763.81 miles from 07 i took a year off, maybe i can hit 10,000 this year

A relative newbie to serious bicycling as a form of transportation, I rode 2,000 miles in 2008. New equipment, better lighting, a BOB trailer and increased enthusiasm will see 2009 approaching 4,000 miles.

congrats to everyone for getting miles in for 2008! it means you were at least healthy enough to get out there..

2008 bike km's: 12,497

2008 car km's: ~300 (and no i still don't have a license)

2008 bus km's: i have no idea, but i probably rode it 200+ times

2008 foot km's: a good deal

being car free, i rode to most of my rides (got a ride to some of the others). one of my goals for '09 is to ride to even more rides.

Nah, I think I killed it hauling a box. I had two, one in my bag and one on the bars and I think it kinda mashed the cylcoputer and killed it. It worked for like two weeks off and on after that then just stopped completely. It never worked well in the cold weather either, below 40F and it was iffy.

I killed two computers this year. One fell off when I jumped a huge snowbank to avoid being hit by 4 snowplows. The replacement died when I rode through a freak rainsquall that like to drownded me. That one was on warranty, so the LBS just gave me a new one.

My mileage was about 800. I work from home and don't need to travel daily.
