Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Inspired by the recent Snow Bikes thread, I make the following post:

About a year ago, my brother saw how much fun I was having riding again so he asked to me to help him find a vintage bike to get back in to riding. I helped him score a nearly mint 1985 Schwinn Passage. We got it rolling and he loved it (and loves it still!)

Anyway in a bit of IPA/ebay fueled "bike exuberance" he bought a second Passage. When it showed up he asked me to help him assemble it. I don't have any pics but needless to say, he had his first bad ebay experience.

The bike showed up with the down tube shifter mounts poorly sawed off so a clamp on cable stop could be used. The FD cable guide on the BB was halfway broken off and the RD cable guide on the BB was gone as well. The bike had a host of other issues. The seller disappeared from ebay and the frame stripped of usable parts, sat in his garage for the last year.

I recently tore down and rebuilt a really nice, lugged Trek 950 mountain bike (he got it, cheap, from right under my nose! I taught him too well!) for him and in lieu of cash for the parts, he gave me the Passage frame.

I did a quick filing of the remaining bits to smooth things out, rattle canned it with the closest color I had on hand. I have always wanted a dedicated rough weather winter bike, as changing tire and wheel depending on the weather is a pain and riding studs for months a a time with no bad weather in sight is a particular level of hell I'd rather not revisit. Parts list of sorts:

3 speed Sturmey Archer rear hub (modern one)
19th sprocket 42th front ring (anyone got a spare ring 144bcd to trade?)
Shimano canti's (to go from 27" to 700c)
Moustache bars and other parts from the bin.
Studded Nokians 106 700c. ( I have had these tires for 3 seasons and they are still in great shape)

I have gotten this far:

paint patches

I am still looking for some parts to get it up and running and of courses some snow! First time I can think of I was wishing for crap weather to go riding in.:thumb:

Great start! I probably have a slightly worn 42 tooth 144 bcd ring you could use. Do you need the Shimano canti brakes? I recently pulled a set off a bike from the dump. Best of luck.

I probably have some Sugino 144 BCD rings; you didn't really say which tooth count you want -- is it 42? And like pastorbob said -- what else do you need. When panhandling it's good to be specific!

Well, first thing: Thank God for clamp-ons!

Is that a Sugino ISO-taper spindle, by any chance? Sure looks like an MW-68.

Charles & PB, Thanks fo rthe offers and I may take you up on them. I did however inquire to nlerner first about a trade for some of the items and he is out of town for a few days. I was waiting to hear from him. If he does not have the stuff I will PM you both and perhaps we can work a trade.

Kurt,

It is a Sugino spindle. The crankset is a Super Mighty I pulled off and old Fuji that had frame damage.

Was it stamped MW-68, by any chance? If so, I know where my own MW-68 came from. Used it on the Paramount (it's a carbon copy of the NR spindle), but I was stumped as to where I got it from.

Well I have the three speed cable hooked up to the hub and following the adjustment directions, I can't get it to go into first. I am using a Sturmey Trigger shifter and a new SRF3 hub. Any tips/suggestions?

Also thanks to pastorbob, Charles Wahl & nlerner for offering up some parts to try and complete this beast!

^^ I too have a set of canti brakes you can have for it. And I also have a NOS Campy, clamp on downtube cable guide that would look great. PM if interested.

I've got spare 144 bcd rings in 42, 43, 44 and 45.

Also have the same problem with my '74 AW hub. Sheldon does have adjustment directions - don't know if you've checked those yet or not.

Hey guys thanks for the offers. I think I have all of the parts to get this bike complete. USAZorro, I went to the Sheldon site (thanks) and realized that I had the indicator chain in to tight. Back it out a 1/2 turn, connected everything and voila, first gear!

I like it. Reminds me of a Marin Muirwoods, which appears to be able to do it all.

Speaking of Marin Muirwoods, I need to take pictures of how I transformed this beast which I found at the dump more then a year ago. The Cheapo Velo Buildoff was my inspiration. :D
