Mountain Biking - Front Brake rub on Avid Ultimate disc brakes

My LBS tells me this is within normal range. I call bullsiht on that. The rear brake doesn't rub at all. I want zero rub. How much rub is 'normal' if any on disc brakes? I think I have a defective brake. Getting it sorted out is a pain, I'll wait until the winter is over and leave it there @ my LBS for them to send back to Avid for warranty, but it will disable the bike for a few weeks.

It's normal, Peep.

Pistons not retracting all the way back into their bores can lead to rub. As well as a tweaked rotor. both simple fixes that a competent shop ought to be able to handle without any warantee issue.

This is something that can happen and be pretty common with any brand of disc brakes.

If you ride your bike in the woods, you're going to develop rotor rub once in a while.

Why does my front brake rub, but my rear brake does not? This bike is less than a year old, about 1,000 miles on it, half of it in the woods, half on the road.

Oh yeah, that would be worth the $3500 price difference. Now you're thinking.

Don't worry, they'll straighten it out. I race for a team they sponsor and I'm buying a brand new $5K road bike from them in January. I've been a customer there for 16 years, and have purchased 4 bicycles there in 4 years, and plenty of other stuff.

That bike is total friggin vaporware.

Might pay to check the set up. I have various Avid disc brakes of various rotor sizes (165mm, 185mm, 203mm) on my bikes, and none of them rub on the rotor. When you lift up the wheel, it should spin freely without rotor drag.

What I do when I set up disc brakes is loosen the post bolts on the calipers, spin the wheel, grab the lever til you're locked in, tighten the bolts down, check for rub, rinse, repeat.
It helps to give the lever a few squeezes before starting to make sure you get full engagement.

I have the same issue. Avid mechanical disc brakes, front rubs and rear does not. I have put about 500 miles on the bike, it had maybe a 100 when I bought it. I will try the caliper bolts like you describe.

Could be a couple things...

1. Fluid could need replacement (not as likely since you say < 1 year old)
2. Proper adjustment of the front caliper. I was having an issue and had the cailper tabs faced. Not a single issue since.

When this happens with my Avid Juicy 5's I have been able to solve it by losening the caliper and then folding a business card in half and slipping it over the rotor and pushing it into the caliper. This will center the caliper , retighten the caliper and the rotor should be in the center.

A beast such as Pcad should be able to "burn" through any rub issues.

If the rotor is a bit out true, and if you're really bent of shape about it, you can put a new rotor on there (if bending it back into shape with the handle of a wrench doesn't work for some reason.) Or you can just ride it and use your brakes, and it'll likely straighten itself out in the long run.

Oh, and you know there's this "search" thing on BF. I know you're kind of new here an all, but...
