Northern California - It's Friggin' Cold Out There

I have no idea what the temp was when I went out, but climbing up Montebello, it the wooded, and shaded areas, it was dang cold! I just checked accuweather, and it says it's 48 F ... and it's 1 PM. The cold really sucked all the energy out of me, so I didn't even make it out to Redwood Gulch.

Did anyone else experience decreased energy output due to cold chill, or is it all in my head?

48? I dream of it getting up to 48.

I took the dogs out for a long walk this morning when it was still around 30 degrees and haven't made it back out since. :o

Hopefully I will get a quick ride in this afternoon (waiting for a friend to come over and pick up a dog that I am watching for her).

No, it's not just you Ron, it's really cold out there. I went for my ride this morning when the temp read 41 degrees; it hurts and it's de-motivating, but you know what? It's better than sitting on my lazy bum. :D

I got past the tough part of the climb on Montebello, and was tempted to turn around at that point. Something in me said to struggle and work through my wimpiness, and just continue. As it turned out, my time wasn't that bad. Made it up in 53 minutes, just 2 shy of my best. The difficult part was descending in this cold snap.

According to my Garmin, it registered a low of 39 F and a high of 44 F.

Just got back from my DaleyCity Loop on the single speed...wasn't all that bad, but I'm right on the water which warms it up a couple of degrees.

What's your daly city loop route, taxi? Yesterday I left a friend's home in San Ramon about 10pm to find my care covered in ice/frost temperature gauge read 32 degrees. So glad I didn't bike and BART there.

The wind made it feel colder yesterday. And it was 29* at 7 am so we waited until 11 to ride. It was in the 40s, so into the wind/shade made it feel colder.

Generally I'm more energized in cold weather, once I get over the initial shock of it -- you know how when you jump into a pool and it kinda sucks your breath away, but then you get used to it? Yeah, like that.

Sure beats the enervating 110* rides we've had -- it's so hot and dry it sucks the sweat right out of your pores and leaves you with a crusty salty coating. :eek:

It was 26 degrees F this morning at 8 at the Farmer's Market in Moraga. Some vendors coming from as far as Fresno were not prepared for this kind of cold. I didn't see many riders on bikes.

The hills were all white, really beautiful.

Home from climbing over and up HW 9 to Skyline. 38 minutes from the bridge. It was a very cold descent back to Pierce. My nose is still feeling it.

I think I prefer riding in triple digit heat. I know, be careful what you ask for ... :p

I thought it was only me that had been effected by the cold. It was 50 degrees w/ a slight breeze here. Took a bit to get warm, 'cept for toes and face. Temp dropped two digits when I arrived home. Avg speed was slow.

I do however like riding in this waaaaay better than triple digits.

Today was to be my Birthday Ride. With the new snow, ice and 28 degree temperature, I am officially 5 years old today!

I was out east over the holidays and experienced my first sub zero temperatures in New Hampshire. It's really not too bad as long as the wind isn't blowing, you only go outdoors for 2 minutes or less, and you come back inside to a warm house and roaring fire ;)

But then I also walked around Boston at night in 15 degree temps and 10-15mph winds and that felt MUCH colder.

Anyway I flew back into Oakland around 11pm last night and the balmy above-freezing weather felt pretty good :)

You may have passed me as i was cllimbing up hwy 9. Ive been doing 9 alot lately. Its cold in that canyon, that small pond on the way up is frozen over.:eek: The decent sure is cold. Ive been decending cautiously from fear of hitting ice on the road. 44 minutes from Down Town Saratoga.

My commute home Friday night (which was before it got *really* cold, I know) took 1h 25 min instead of my usual 1h 10. It was nice, just slow -- and it got a lot nicer when i got into the shower.

I have been freezing - I'll never complain it is too hot, but when it drops to the low 40's/high 30's I struggle. I was out for about 30 miles yesterday and Pinehurst was especially chilly (as expected). But hand warmers in your gloves really help :-)

Coming through Redwood Gulch and Stevens Canyon it felt like about high 30s-low 40s. 'Went over a couple of brigdes that were iced over. If you're not in a hurry, it's a nice change of pace to ride in cold weather (as long as you're dressed for it).

+1 on Pinehurst. I rode Grizzly Peak yesterday afternoon and enjoyed the sun, but the minute you start that descent...talk about micro climates.

I walked home in twelve degree weather last night, and it was seven (negative two with wind chill) at about ten this morning... You guys are pathetic. :P

(Says the guy too chicken to try out how effective Gatorskins are in ice and snow. ;))

Our pipes froze last night. The outside thermometer read 26.4 degrees !!!! I have grown very soft living here and I cant take the cold anymore :). Pipes have proper lagging now.
