there's a 100 $500 frames. everyone has their favorites. mine are the soma rush, the surly steamroller, the lemond fillmore, the jamis sputnik, the IRO angus, the alien frame.

I agree. With the amount you're willing to spend, you'll be able to find a deal on something nice. Chances are, it'll be used, but there's nothing wrong with that.

If you're looking for something NEW perhaps are Surly Steamroller or a Schwinn Madison. I'd choose the latter, but only because I don't like brown, but that doesn't mean the Steamroller isn't a good frame.

i do mostly street riding...occasional longer commutes.

I have had my eye on the Soma and am almost decided on it, but i just wanna make sure i check everything else out first.

this may be a dumb question...but since the Soma uses and 1" steerer tube...does that mean i will need a 1" stem or will the stem off my Langster fit?? Thanks

You can buy a shim that will make your 1-1/8" stem fit just fine on the 1" steerer tube.

I did that on my Rush with a Thomson stem and it worked flawlessly.

thats an idea, but i would rather just get the right size stem. Are they pretty hard to find compared to the 1 1/8" stems?

Almost any LBS (anyone that has the Merry Sales catalog) will be able to order one for you. They'll probably match that price + shipping if you tell them about it. Then you can keep your money in your community and have a good resource (besides these here reliable forums...) to go to for questions/help. I recently built up a Rush and love it!

Yea i found a place somewhat close that has them in stock for a pretty decent price. $430 for frame and fork

I recommend using the shim to make your steerer 1-1/8. So many more options. Nothing wrong with using the shim, it's safe.

there's far more choices in the 1 1/8" and yes 1" are hard to find. Nothing wrong with using a shim, you'll never see it once installed and no dangerous or adverse effects from having one, they're very safe to use.
