Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Want a front blinky just like PB SuperFlash...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi,
I don't plan on riding in the early morning, dusk, or night but would
like a front blinky on my bike in the belief that it might lower
the chance of a vehicle blowing me away in an intersection.
I am happy with the PB SuperFlash on the back... I would
like the equivalent on the front of my bike. I don't have a
lot of room on the handlebars due to the mini brake handles
and computer.
Has anyone ever hacked the PB light and replaced the red
leds with white?
Thanks for any le(a)ds :)
Jerry
You'd be better off buying one of the many dedicated front lights on the market. If you like their products, Planet Bike makes several different models. I think they are called the 'Blaze'.
PB superflash is made with a clear lense, is it not?

I think the new ones are...The one I have has a red lense.

The clear PB superflash has red LED's in it, blinks red.
Or one of tons of the cheapo's on eBay or the DealExtreme/KaiDomain web sites.

The PB Blaze has a blink mode with the same PBSF flashing pattern.

I use a Fenix L2D in blink mode during sunlight. I take it off for better lights at night time.
The Planet Bike One Watt Blaze has the Super Flash blink pattern.
The half watt Blaze has the more standard on/off pattern.

I would recommend a little light called the Guardian.. Many ways to mount.. Best would be with a velcro strap around the headtube.. Here is what they look like, many colors to choose from.. They use inexpensive batteries, cr2032 and weigh under an ounce...

I forget the name offhand, but Performance had a Blackburn lithium-ion "rechargeable" light.....very small, 4 (or 5?) LED's close together and lined up horizontally. Will charge off any standard battery. About 40 lumens. I tested it and it was pretty damn bright for its size. Also had a matching red rear light for the same price.
I have a Planet Bike Sport Spot
http://ecom1.planetbike.com/3028.html
Can be bar mounted, helmet mounted, or strap mounted for use as a headlamp, on a arm etc.
It can be set so all four lights flash, in spot mode with only two center LEDs ons, in flood mode with only two outer LEDs on, or in high mode with all LEDs on.
I have used it on the bike, both on bars and on helmet, for home repairs, to illuminate a Halloween pumpkin.
The nice part is it will give out a little usable light in high mode if you get caught out on the bike after dark, and serve as a strobe during the day, but it is small enough to be used for other things.
I use a Cateye hl/el 130/135. It is small, uses 2aa and is very bright. Can be used steady, blink or off. Batteries seem to last forever. I use it as a blinky only.
I have to echo the Planet Bike headlight comments. Their page (http://ecom1.planetbike.com/headlights.html) has a description of the different blinking capabilities. They also have a "light finder (http://planetbike.com/page/learn/lightfinder/)" that demonstrates the beam.
One huge advantage that the OP may like (according to the post) is that you can buy a helmet strap (http://ecom1.planetbike.com/3101.html) that is compatible with most PB headlights. I just got one, and think I will prefer it to give me better visibility for people at cross-streets.
