I've been riding one of these for over a year now and I really like it. But it feels soft after riding my other road bikes. It was my first build and I'm a little attached to it, but I was wondering what people thought the frameset was worth in case I ever decided to take it to market.
Unfortunately, I sold the suntour superbe groupset, which might drop the value, but the frame was available in a frameset only option so it might not have changed much.
So, frame and fork. What do you think it'd be worth or what it would fetch? I'd probably get rid of the stem and bars with it since I don't have anything I could use those with.
This is still very hypothetical since this was my first build and I'm a little attached to it for that reason. It's also a great ride.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Set up an emailed search on ebay for it, and watch for a while. Not too long ago, I believe similar frames were going for between $200-$300. There are some nutty Trek fans who can drive the cost even higher, but usually on the late 70's models.
I thought you were racing that frame, doing the C&V retrogrouches proud! What happened? You found modern technology?

If it helps, I sold an '86 Trek 560 Pro Series frameset (63.5cm) with a Shimano 600 headset on ebay for $130 in July '08. (Although I had hoped for a bit more, I was satisfied given I bought the bike for $40 at a yard sale complete with a Dura-Ace 7400 group that now resides on my Trek 2300. :) )

I was racing the frame and racing it proud. It's still a backup race bike that I'll take out for recovery rides and such. My main ride has always been my CAAD9, I just didn't have the right size last season. The trek also feels really 'soft' in comparison and it weighs a fair bit more (2-3 lbs atleast). A bit of a concern
I'm just enamored with the specialized S-works E5's that are no longer made. I figured I'd sell the trek if I could get enough for one of those frames. That won't happen for 200-300.
I also feel bad that I don't ride it as much as I should.
The trek is my first build though, and I think I'll regret selling it. It's kind of nice to own a nice handbuilt steel frame. I can honestly say that it's the best fitting bike I've ever ridden, so it would be a folly to sell it.
If I can put aside 100 bucks or so, I might have to get a second set of cables for my powermeter so I can use it on the trek as well. It'd start getting a lot more use that way, but it would also defeat the purpose of the bike. Oh, I could just use heart rate!
Hm... Now I want to go back to school and ride it some ;)

I just bought a 531 Trek 520 with 600 friction on ebay for $104. The condition was quite decent considering it was actually ridden. It was local pickup 112 miles from a major city though. I guess I was the only fanatic Trek fan in Houston, hehe:D,,,,BD

Wow!
I want that!
Egad, it's like a disease that won't stop spreading! Thank goodness I have a student's income and space. I can barely fit three bikes with my dorm arrangement haha.

That's all the reason you need to keep it. Use it for distance rides where comfort is the priority over speed. And keep it for your old age. :p

BD, what year is your 520 and when did they start using 531? I just bought an 84 but its got 501.

I'm not certain but I believe Trek only used 501 for two (or was it 3?) years? I have an 83 560 and 84 830, and both have 501. I'm not sure if I've seen an 85 Trek in person. The 520 is an 86, double butted 531 main tubes, and Tange stays/forks. I'm about half done with the refurb. It fits me so well it's unreal. I have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy it.:D,,,,BD

That there be a Reynolds 531Professional tubed frame which is the same as 531SL. I'd say the frameset (with fork) is worth $200-250 at most as I've sold a few more collectible Italians for $250-300.

Did you mean the 760, or 520? Sorry, I'm confused, lol. It doesn't take much sometimes.:D,,,,BD
Dangit, got caught by the sun going down again. All I had left was to true the front wheel, mount the tire, and put it on the bike. I had some Specialized Pro tires that were in nice shape. They're great and all, but a set of Erilium 2's are in the works. The skinwall and red stripe would look SO nice on the 520.

Just found this thread again since I'm looking to sell the bike.
I'm still sad that the market value is only 200-250...

Your selling a well used Chevy not a Ferrari.

I bought my '84 58cm Trek frameset for about $150 off ebay, but it still had a good portion of the Superbe group attached. Crankset, brakes, headset, FD, post & saddle.
Wish I still had the bike.
Might be difficult to get $200 to $250 for it right now IMHO. If you are in a hot market, then I would be tempted to build it back up with some decent parts (particularly if you have access to a nice donor).

Haha, voice of reason.
Maybe I'll put it in a cardboard box and put it away in my parents' attic if worst comes to worse. Or make it a conversion so it gets atleast some use.

I'm 20, and I don't really have any sentimental attachment to the frameset and whatnot. I'm just sad that it isn't getting much use at all.
I guess I might convert to a fixie it so it gets some use for winter training. Maybe it'll get rebuilt in time with a carbon fork with 1 inch steerer and such.
