Cyclocross - Steel frame with disc brakes AND rack mounts? Help!

This bike is going to see courier and touring duty as well as weekend cross racing, and I'd like to be able to truck an extra banker's box or two front and rear.

The Salsa La Cruz fits the bill perfectly, but lacks proper rack mounts, and the 2009 Brodie Romax, Soma Double Cross Disc, and Steelwool Tweed all have superfluous cantilever studs and cable stops. Is there anything on the market that I'm overlooking, short of going custom or hacking up a brand new frame?

Ill second the gunnar, I just ordered one and it should be here in a couple weeks. I went with the cross hairs though. One thing I really liked about dealing with them was the owner Richard personally answers most phone calls and is supper friendly and knowledgable. Actually after talking to him about fit, I sent him some measurements off a bike that worked well for me minus a couple things and he actually talked me out of doing a full custom geometry because their stock 56 would be close enough I could make it perfect with a proper stem and spacers and that it would save me ALOT of money.

Since gunnar is esentially a "stock" waterford they know all about custom everything so you can pay a little more for custom paint, braze ons, etc... Personally since my bike will see a little touring as well I opted for a 3rd water bottle boss on the bottom of the down tube as well as a 2 eyelet dropout over the stock 1 eyelet dropout, and I had to throw in custom paint in hopes this will be a lifetime bike.

I would recomend them to anyone, I am super excited about mine and everyone i know with one LOVES it.

It's a bit heavy for cross, but the Singular Peregrine is disc only, with rack mounts:

i mount a rear rack on my salsa la cruz, granted the axiom streamliner rack ($35) is not up for true trekking. however, Tubus makes a disc-brake friendly rear rack (~$130), apparently, which should be up to the task (50#+). i carry 30# on my axiom rack (books mostly) on a 20mi r/t commute with no problem. the axiom aluminum is more than sturdy enough for credit card touring or light tent touring. i even ran my rear rack with fenders (i made slight hack modifications to my SKS until i upgraded to VO/Honjo-type fenders).

granted, this only applies to the rear rack; i don't know of a fix for the front rack---i simply never looked for one. but rather than hack up a perfectly good frame, it'd be far easier to find a welder to help you weld a nice front rack---plus you'd make a lot of friends with your new product!

anyway, if i were to do real trekking, i'd get a bike built for that, but that bike would not be an useful choice for cx. the salsa la cruz pretty much does everything else. plus, it's orange.

/There is a new bike just out, by Vogoss (spelling?) called the fisticuffs. There is a thread about it over on the commuting forum. You may also use a CC frame with a 1 x 1 fork.

How did you mount the rear rack? Via clamp-on adapter plate? The Salsa has no rack braze-ons, IIRC.

I have an irrational hatred of eccentric bottom brackets - probably because I tend to destroy everything shy of BMX BB's. :(

Cotic Roadrat. The canti mounts (not just the studs) on the frame are removable.

I absolutely love mine. In the pic below it's set up with a nashbar carbon cyclocross fork, but I'm probably going to use the stock (steel) fork when I put the disc brakes on.

the rack attaches to the rear eyelets, and to the seat stay bridge. no p-clamps, etc. if i wanted to, the rack also mounts on the rear axle (the axle runs through it) and attaches at the seat stay bridge.

incidentally, you can also kind of see the SKS fender stay hack that i did (attached using the same eyelets---it worked fine; but my VO fenders work even better).
