Bicycle Mechanics - Confused on what Rohloff hubs to purchase.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. #8062 - Disc speedhub, bolt on, 32h rim, in black
#8022 - Disc speedhub, bolt on, QR 32h rim, in black
#8000 - Speedhub, rim brake style, QR, 32h rim, in silver.

I have two bikes, a two or three year old Santa Cruz Superlight, and a two or three year old Santa Cruze Juliana that I'm buying for. Is #8022 the right one? I remember somebody recommending a red one?

Who is distributing Rohloff state side? My source may have limited access...

Well the first two are for disk brakes and the last one is a non disk brake hub. I'm guessing 8022 is a quick release version of 8062 but I'm not sure.

I looked at QBP and while the item numbers vary they also have 3 models. One that is non disk brake and uses a quick release, one disk brake with a bolt on axle, and one disk brake with a quick release. They listed a QR in the name of the quick release versions (and had pictures to confirm all of these things). I'm betting that your #8022 should not have bolt-on in the name. So, do you want a disk brake and if so do you want a quick release or a bolt on axle?

QBP is distributing them.
You need the one with the speedbone.

We will both be pulling bob trailers with a quick release axles.

Any recommendations on a chain tensioner? Best out there?

The Rohloff is a good one, I've had good results with the On-One Doofer.
The Rohloff is a double wheel, the Doofer is a single wheel.

I like the idea of a single wheel when it comes to mud.

I emailed my mechanic this thread, any last words of advice?

The Rohloff Speedhub Finder (http://www.rohloff.de/fileadmin/rohloffde/produkte/speedhub/speedhubsuche2/speedhubsuche.en.html) should let you determine exactly which hub fits your bike. According to the Rohloff website -- all the speedhubs are available in silver, black and red.

I think you have to use the external shift box with a disk brake, if you don't I prefer my hub that has the internal shifter (they have to do with how the shift cables attach to the hub).

I downloaded the complete Rohloff manual before I ordered my bike with the Rohloff hub. It is quite informative. A 3 part PDF available on their web site.

I got the Civia Hyland Rohloff which comes with the hub. The version Civia uses is disc brake, external shift box, quick release and OEM axle plate. This is intended for frames specifically designed for Rohloff hub installation.

The external shift box adds a little weight but makes wheel removal and installation marginally easier. Per posts on the Thorn Cycles web site it is more subject to damage in an accident.

BTW QBP is a sub distributor but Rohloff does have a U.S. office listed on their web site and a U.S. primary distributor also listed. I talked with the U.S. office and was told that the U.S. market is about 10% of their sales.
