Mountain Biking - convert my roadie or just buy a mtb?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The cheap bet would be to go ahead any try the different tires first.

actually, tires would be more more expensive. if i get the bike i described above, it will be a straight-up trade. so it will cost me nothing.
if i try to put knobbies on my Legato, can someone recommend me some decent, not over-expensive dirt tires? i have 700x28s on there now, and i don't think a tire that's much larger will fit in my chainstays, so a 700x32 might be the widest.
basically, i want to turn my bike into a flat-bar cyclocross bike and ride it through wooded dirt trails. the dirt around here is really rocky, so i am just afraid this will be a wasted effort because the rigidity of my bike will rattle itself to pieces on those rocky trails.

Try Nashbar, and the trade will end up being a lot more expensive if you lose the utility of your current ride. That's just my opinion, though.

the "utility" of my current ride is that it takes up space in the closet.
