On my bike I have a DYI halogen system with 20W MR16 running overvolted at 14.4V instead of 12V. I've got regular 24 degree non-energy efficient bulb from Ushio. With 5Ah NiMh battery and a smart charger it was about $120. It is quite heavy, about 2.5 pounds, and it runs for about two hours on one charge.

Yesterday I received 900 lumen SSC P7D flashlight from DX. With batteries, charger and mount it was about $70. It is quite light, less than .5 pound and should run for 40(?) minutes on max.

I think the halogen light gives twice as much light compared to P7. On the other hand halogen light is of yellowish color and LED light appears a bit brighter. Assuming that P7 is four 3W LEDs it seems that light output per watt is about the same for LED and 20% overvolted halogen. Using energy efficient bulbs may add 50% more to halogen.

I started with a DIY over-volted halogen setup very similar to yours. I converted to a DIY LED triple. It was very hard to compare the light output because the halogen was yellowish and the LED was white. I concluded that both were more than adequate and the LED was more durable and energy efficient. With the same battery pack the halogen would run for a couple of hours while the LED would run for about 7 hours. Also, the LED light had a low setting that was very useful and would get me 14 hours on the battery pack.

how does the beam pattern compare?
LED flashlight has relatively uniform ~30 degree beam. Halogen is dependent on a bulb. MR16 has 60 degree beam with some focusing. On a '24 degree' bulb there is a bright 24 degree beam with some spill up to 60 degree, which I find quite useful.
