Northeast - Latest NYC Smell Scare

Last Sunday around 12 noon- 3 PM I smelled a very strong nasty chemical odor in the air around Jackson heights/Woodside....my co-worker also smelled it in Passaic, NJ at the same time.
Here's an article from the times - tho I have smelled the syrupy thing before - this was NOT it! This was strong and irritating, making our throats burn and felt a bit nauseous and light-headed...

Oh man, this brings back memories. I remember smelling that sweet stuff when I lived in the city, esp. during the winters around 2000-2002. Then it went away; or I thought I had gotten used to it.
pgoat, have you looked into wearing one of these http://www.wiggle.co.uk/c/Cycle/7/Anti_Pollution_Masks/ ? Haven't tried one myself but they look pretty cool, sort of like Darth Vader lol.
those would be good to have on hand in case something is let loose...just whip it out and slap it on....I should get one. Thanks!

I smelled this too, for a second I thought my wife had decided to make pancakes at night but no such luck.
another article (http://gothamist.com/2009/01/05/the_maple_syrup_smell_is_back.php) described it as smelling like anti-freeze - that is closer to what I smelled.

The case of the mysterious syrup smell has been officially solved. It was coming from Jersey... No offense, but dad always told me Jersey stank. LOL! :lol:
