Road Cycling - SPD Sandals GREAT!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just finished 1st ride on my new (got them this am) SPD sandals.
Had to change the pedals, as there are no longer cleats for my old pedals.
So, had new cleats put on my regular road shoe also.
Anyway, they are GREAT. Feet cool, no scrunched toes. Very comfy!
Ooooooh! I'm hoping they go on sale. I really want a pair, but shucks! $75! There has to be a way to get at least a little markdown there! I'm jealous. Serious.

That sounds great! Just another item to add to the list of things that are going to make me broke. I'm sure if they offered it, many of you would have cleats surgically implanted right into your feet :p

If they were being surgically implanted, wouldn't they have to be recessed?
:D

If you've ever seen me dance, you'd swear I had road cleats permanantly attached to my feet... shoes not withstanding. :D

Here is MY bicycle math:
1. I don't smoke - 2 packs a day are, I would guess, about $5.00?? x's 365 days = $1,825
2. I drink no alcohol. I have no clue what a beer costs, but would guess $1.50?? I drink one can of generic pop (16 cents per can) per day, gaining me about $1.84 per day over a 2 beer a day drinker = $1,037, and that doesn't count hard liquor or wine.
3. My bicycling keeps me pretty healthy. No heart attacks even at age 64, lowered blood pressure, etc., etc., so I would put in about $2,000 extra in savings.
I can't count cars, as my wife and I own 3. But I do use the bikes when I can for errands and short trips.
So, I end up with something like $4,862 bucks in annual savings over not riding a bike, not counting bike purchases.
So, I think I can rightly afford $75 for sandals and $65 for pedals and a new cassette and chain and a good tune up!
I like my "bike math." :D

The sandals are great, aren't they? I love mine in the spring, summer and fall. I have to admit they look a little dorky, but how nice to have cool breezes on my toeses.

I like your "bike math" too.
Might have to get me a pair of those sandals for my shorter summer trips, too... all my bikes have the same pedal system now (Egg Beater), so I need something easy to put on and walk around with to help enthuse me about shorter rides.
Ok... talked me into it. I'll be picking up a pair in a lil bit today.

My friend in Colorado Springs, Tom Gibb, wears them for all his biking, including a tour of Iceland and much winter riding. They are not just for shorter rides.
Denver, I was thinking the same thing, because for my next tour, this will definitely be my shoe of choice!

With socks? ;)

Good point. I promised my wife I wouldn't spend any money on bike stuff this month so she could indulge a little bit, but maybe next month I'll begin to learn how versatile they are... :D

In winter, he wears a good warm sock with some sort of waterproof outer layer. He says they are much warmer than any shoes he has ever tried.
I wore socks today.

anyone know how generous the size fitting is? I'm gonna need some for the summer (my feet get really hot), but I normally take a 49 in northwave and a 50 in Sidi's. The biggest they had on nashbar were a 47/48

Aaaugh! Too late. I just ordered them from Performance. Oh well, at least I'm sure they're new and not worn off some funky person's funky foot. :D

The 43-44 were just a bit small, although I normally take a 44. They do not make a 44-45, so I ended up with a 45-46, which is actually fine as there is a lot of adjustment. I have a wide foot at the ball of my foot.
Someone else is also producing a riding sandal - perhaps Look?
I saw them- they're pretty ugly. The LOOK is right on top of the strap of the sandals in yellow. I'm not all about that. I just want a sandal that's ordinary looking and doesn't stand out as much.
Denver, you are an inspiration! :D

It would be really nice if Teva or Timberland started making cycling sandals. I like the Lake sandals though because they have a higher lip at the toes. There was a brand called Exxus which offered SPD sandals too but I've not heard too many good things about them. I'm not even sure they're still around.
Heh not to throw this off track but according to my gf, a properly made titanium reinforcing plate in your foot can support a titanium cleat that pokes through the skin. With titanium being "biocompatible", the flesh and skin would attach itself and heal around it, forming a seal. So it's techically possible to get cleats implanted.. freaky.
You all have been watching too many Terminator movies!

Where in the world did you find the Look Sandal? I love my Look Pedals, but here in the windy city it gets awfully hot come July. I would love to give my toes some breathing room (plus, I would be able to show off my pedicures). PLEASE HELP
I believe the Look sandal I saw was on Nashbar. And Nashbar is having a little sale right now too, so you may want to skee-daddle on over to their website and see what they're talking about.

Are you certain they were Look sandals and not Lake sandals? I have never seen sandals made by Look.
Oh gosh, you're right. They are LAKE sandals, not LOOK.
Thanks for the save!
