Mountain Biking - 90's vs 2000's frame geometry.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
My main bike is a 07 Gary Fisher Tassajara, 17.5 frame. I also have just rebuilt a 1996 Fisher 18 in' frame. I am finding even after replacing the 140mm stem with a 80mm and replacing the flat bar with one that has more rise, I am still bent over more than I feel comfortable with. So I have two ?'s
1. Where the 90's bikes ment to have riders more hunched over, I mean you look at the older bikes with those long stems. And if so why?? What is the purpose.
2.Is there any kind of add on product that I can buy to raise the stem up higher. meaning where the stem attaches to the fork,so I guess I am looking to make the fork tube higher if possible. If you look at the fisher archives, you can see there is a 2 in rise between the top of the headset and where the stem attaches.

If I can get even a 1 in rise it would feel much better on my back.

LMAO, I have been thinking that myself. What sucks is I just put a brand new low rise bar on today." still higher than the stock flat bar" And was really hoping that I wouldn't have to invest in another set of bars. Are those high rise bars pretty strong?? I am a 250 lb rider.

I think Fisher is known for having long top tubes. Compare the geometry to other brands of the same size.

Those bars are 5 bucks and steel, I bet they are pretty strong (heavy).
Ok ill bite, $5 bucks!!!???? Tell me where, I may just try them!!! I really don't care about weight, they will be for a old school beater bike.

The steel version is linked by clicking on the picture. They also have an alloy version for around $15 that can be found here :http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00075CLBY?smid=A2TE9IQP68MWQU&tag=nextag-sg-delta-20&linkCode=asn.
If 5" is a little high they have a 3.5" version as well.

There are steerer tube extenders. I'm guessing you need 1 1/8" (http://aebike.com/page.cfm?action=list&PageID=30&category=671&modelId=2823&type=T),

Thats to cool, thanks for the link. I went to two bike shops today and asked if there was anything like that, both said no and suggested a adjustable stem. Thats what I ended up installing , I haven't tried it other than riding a few mins in my hood, but it feels much better. But I am going to show this to the shops. Thanks again!!!:thumb: I wish I would have thought of that invention.
