OK, This will only be about my 10'th crash this winter. Recursive should be proud. This one was enough fun I took a picture.
Fresh snow hiding glare ice, at night, makes for interesting riding ... even with Nokians.
Hope you enjoy, and I fell twice on that ride. Chewed up my shin and a little banged but the collarbones are fine. :D

did you land on the good shoulder or bad shoulder?

Hey guys, this was with studded Nokians, the Hakepelitaa (or whatever) and of course now I wish I got the bigger ones.

They were, and the link you gave has instructions for making them towards the bottom.
I've been meaning to try that myself...one more on the long list of "Things I Want to Do with Bikes"

There but for the grace of my Kenda Klondikes go I. I could have taken that photo about four times last year. This year I'm more practiced/careful and on a better bike with better tires, so nothing specatacular to report yet. I did have my second 'failure to unclip tip' of the winter yesterday. My winter shoes are stickier.

If you survive the winter after riding on all that ice, just think how S-M-O-O-T-H you're gonna be on the road in spring! ;)

John, that's really funny cause that's exactly what i think about when I not sure of my footing ... pedal smooth. Unfortunately, the rest of the time my ice bike power grips do not hold my apres ski sneakers tightly enough to pull up as they are sized for my winter boots and it's a pain to resize, so I end up mashing and losing anything I might have gained. :(

Any one of those cycle-crossers (criss-crossers? cross-dressers?? ) on here could help 'ya ... they LIVE and DIE for that stuff!

Just HTFU and race cyclocross next year. You're doing it now anyway. Same low speed wrecks because of crappy footing. Just this way you get to taunt and sometimes get awards....or so I've heard.
Besides....It's only a 1/2 hr.

He can't man! He's told me several times how dangerous mass-start races are. I mean, if he tried more of them he might fall... or trash a frame... or break a collarbone. You know, all those things he DOESN'T do by avoiding the races.

Ara's got those at the shop. They're great tires, but the studs are fairly short and blunt. I could see why they'd be great on ice, but not necessarily snow-covered ice. Seems that once the snow was, maybe, half an inch thick, the studs probably wouldn't even be getting down to grip the ice. Cool tires, though.

Guys, I have a torn meniscus in my right knee and can't run. I'm not afraid of falling (obviously), I just can't run!
MJH2, yea, you trade off much lower drag but fewer bigger studs. Mine are great for commuting in so so weather, not ideal for glare ice. They are fine for lakes and smooth ice, the problem is crowned ice or ice ruts where your tire wants to slide. There aren't enough studs far enough out on the tire to grab well and ... then ... boom goes the dynamite.

I think you're greatly overestimating the amount of "running" there is in cyclocross. I'd say the sections of running are 10-20 seconds at most at a time. Totally rough estimate, but probably pretty accurate. You might do 2 minutes of running at most for a long race...in the 4's fields.

Psi, if I run like a girl (slowly with little leg thrust or push), I can run, but I can't try to go fast at all or it hurts. I tried tennis for about 3 hours over the summer and it hurt and you could see the power drop off on my right leg afterward. I'm trying to lay off it till spring and then I'll gingerly try running again.
LOL Kimber.
You would have run me over and kept going psycho.

That hurts. You portray me as some mean person. I would have stayed there by your side. Nurturing your developing skills.
And of course . . . laughing my arse off at you hitting that tree. So, I guess your right :D

I took a spill while on duty today while walking downhill on an icy sidewalk. Tried to get up but slipped again right away and had to crawl on hands and knees to the grass to get firm footing. I looked back at the snow where I slipped and it looked similar to your post, except a lot bigger, since I actually skidded downhill a little. I keep checking youtube for keywords "Fat" "Cop" "Falls" but so far I seem to have dodged a bullet, apparently nobody nearby had the ever present video camera rolling.

Problem is stud count. I ride Nokian Extremes and have never had an issue--- and we have no shortage of ice in the winter (more ice than snow).
The trouble with your logic is that if there is too much snow to reach the ice, your knobbies work just fine. You generally don't need studs at all for snow... which is effectively what you have in this case.
