General Cycling Discussion - Contribute to the 'zine

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

O.K., inspired by a combination of Willam Karsten's necessary spark in getting "riding fixed" rolling, Mayo's intoxicating command of the english language, a Fugazi kick I've been on recently, and the 5th Lagunitas Rich Ale of the evening, I've decided to rally the troops here at Bikeforums to get a zine together of, by, and for the people of Bikeforums. Within these forums I've read enchanting tales of tours, unbelievable daily commutes through the most hellish of conditions, and general bikespeak that keeps me logging back on for more. There's certainly enough content here for several different publications.
This is a call for bike pictures, commuting stories, news of the cycling weird, childhood bike memories, bicycle haikus, bicycle poems, bicycle songs, bike cartoons, bike art, trail tales, bicycle love, bicycle lust, bicycle betrayal, bicycle sex?!?, fiction or non-fiction, as long as cycling is at its heart.
Send 'em to me, either via PM or e-mail at gonesh9@yahoo.com
There's a rich cycling and zine culture here in P-town, so I could easily get some help to publish something worth reading. All of the proceeds will be happily donated back to Bikeforums, except for maybe a six pack for creative editing needs... :)
O.K., let's roll-

Would it be acceptable to go through the archives for this content? The last month or so has been pretty quiet around here.
EDIT: That is to say, I don't have any epic tales from the last month or so, but quite a few prior to that.
Cool idea! Bikeforums has quickly become my favorite place to post bike stuff... especially diggin the Commuter forum, and like the sense of community that many seem to have here.

Most definitely, anything posted in the past would be useable. I just don't want to grab what I want from other members' previous posts, seems sort of like plagiarism... I want members to contribute what they either have already posted, or more content they have yet to post. Anything you want, bicycle-related. I will edit it in agreement with each author for content (not for censorship), and compile it. If you want to nominate a post or work you have seen here to be included, we could contact the author to make sure it's alright to use it.
Well, I'm going to go ahead and tell you right now that I implicitly give blanket permission to reprint anything I've posted on BikeForums. I wouldn't have posted anything to a public forum I didn't expect to be made publically available and accessable. This of course assumes you found any of my posts worthy of reprinting. :)

My tour of Tasmania is here:

Feel free to use that in the 'zine as well as any pictures you'd like.
Something else that came to mind on this evening's ride after discovering a previously unseen glow-worm colony in the John Hogan rainforest -- perhaps we could have a section entitled "moments like these" or something similar. It would contain short descriptions of little things seen along the way on rides that normally wouldn't be described as "epic", but moments worthy of mention nonetheless.

Great idea! I'll post a separate thread for a few different topics for it, and any post replied to it could be added to the zine.

I can highly recommend a layout/print person if you need one. Did all the lay out for the Mayo book, and arragned printing as well at a good price. Very full service, very detailed and communication oriented, and also a self owned buisness (I'd say local, but about 500 miles from me). If you need it, PM and I'll shoot you an address.

Thanks, I'll be getting in touch with you as it progresses.
Right now I'm going ahead and just picking out memorable threads, funny antics, legendary members' quotes, etc., and compiling them in folders... I'm starting to think that it would probably be alright to use posts people have already written, unless anyone has any objection to it. I don't really see any legal repercussions to doing that, as when people post things to an internet site they should figure their words could be duplicated and reused elsewhere, kinda like what Khuon said.

I only had one person to work with, so it wasn't that complicated. If I were you, I'd pm people just to be sure, and make sure you have Joe's blessing. It's his site, so the word I would think become property of him. But, for saftey's sake, just get a PM and make sure they don't sweat it. If it were me, that's what I'd do.
Feel free to drop me an email, I'll gladly let you in on all the odds and ends that I've gone up against and worked with.. It's not hard to do this, and it's pretty rewarding. BUT there are some things that are.. issue matic.

Yeah, that's what I have been starting to think I'll do- gather some posts that would work in the zine, and PM the people who wrote them asking if it'd be alright to do so. Also good point about contacting Joe, since it is his sight after all. I'm also thinking of starting a few threads specifically for the zine that people can reply to, where I let them know that their posts might be used in my project.

Definitely PM people before using their quotes. I don't have a problem with it, but I understand that one or two others might.
