Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Using cross levers as reverse pull (TT) on bullhorn

Has anyone used 24mm clamp diameter cross levers on the ends of their bullhorns? Think of it as an alternative to buying TT-specific reverse pull levers.

i have and they work fine, go for it

i put my cross lever on the tops of my bullhorns. might be able to put it on the ends but cable routing could be potentially unsightly.

you still have to plug the end of the bar, they look/feel a bit bulkier, and the cable route isn't as clean. works alright, though.

The reason I want to do this is to prepare for the S-A S3X hub being released. I'll want to run bullhorns with the bar-end shifter and I'll want brake action (Fr+Rr) on the ends.

Any reason not to just reverse the lever so that the routing doesn't stick up then make an immediate turn around?

I don't know what you mean.

If you mount the levers on the end of your bullhorns the brake cables will be facing forward which means you will have to "loop" the cables back around towards the bars to get them to run along the bars, if you mount the levers backwards the cable will not need a loop and will face the bars and run smooth and clean along the bars. :thumb:

most cross levers can run a cable either way, as long as the housing has a ferrule on the end and you use a round-head cable. reversing the lever (so the pivot/fulcrum is no longer at the end of the horn) does bad things for lever feel since your strongest fingers are now acting with the greatest leverage.

If you mean mounting them to resemble TT/reverse-pull levers, that is what I am planning on. The clamp will be on the very end, and the lever will point toward the back of the bike.

TT levers are designed to cable route along the bar, whereas cross levers are not. even if you route the cable from the other end on a cross lever, it won't be as flush/clean as on a TT lever. it'll work but it won't be as flush at the end, probably not a big deal but worth pointing out.

^ just on the first inch or so where my fingers will never find themselves.

sorry i dont have a better shot of this, but this is my old bike with the CX lever in that position, worked like a charm
