Mountain Biking - Are Mavic hubs noisy?

I am considering getting a set of Mavic Crosslands or Crossrides and wonder if they make a lot of ratchety noise when coasting? I have always used Shimano hubs and like that the ones I have had are somewhat quiet when coasting. Just curious if anyone on here can provide some feedback on this.

Also notes on any other kind of feedback on them would be appreciated too. I am looking for a wheelset that is reasonably light and descent price ~ $200 range.

The cross lands aren't as noisy as the cross max but not as quiet as a shimano hub.

I had some CrossRides and concur. The 'Rides were slightly more resonant than my XT's, but no where near noisy.

My crossrides are way more noisy than my XT and Deore hubs, but arent half as noisy as some i have heard on the trails. Some sound like chainsaws!

Stay away from Forte brand hubs. Mine are really loud.

My kings sound like I am being chased by a swarm of angry bees - they have been retired to my road bike, don't coast as much. Now I ride XTRs, don't even notice the sound.

Hope Pro II's are even louder than King. They have a click-click sound instead of King's "buzzzz" sound, but I still think they're louder.

I love 'em.

I'm sure loud hubs are fine, I'm just not use to hearing loud sounds when I coast, and I'm tool old to change it much!

From what everyone says here the pre-made Mavic's might be ok, but I might look into a set of XT/717's.

Noisy hubs are noisy because they have a stronger engagement.. quiet hubs have weak engagement. More engagement points may also produce more noise.

The Kings buzz and the hopes click because the kings have 3 times as many engagement points.

strong engagement > weak engagement

I had a set of XT x317's and a set of XT x517's...I really liked them both. The 517's went bye-bye with a bike I sold on eBay. The x317's were sold to help buy my current crap.

I think XT hubs are nice. If I were going back to loose balls...I'd prob. go back to XT.

on my road bike at least i like loud hubs instead of a bell or somthin, if i'm comin up behind someone i just give it a quick backpedal which is louder than just coasting and with loud hubs lets people know you are there (bells are lame)

My bike seems to catch leaves in the swing arm, that really sounds like angry bees

also the king hubs have a buzz to them cause they have like over 100 clicks (points of engagment) per turn, while the hopes have i believe 24, which makes me wonder if dt 240s are worth the xtra cash over hopes cause the star ratchet has only 18 clicks, and hopes are sposed to be great on reliablity w/e

If your freehub is too loud for your liking, lube it. That is all.

Basically, I concur with a lot of what was said before me. I had a set of Mavic Crosslands on my Prophet and found them to be very quiet. Problem is that I shattered two sets of engaging pawls in the hub. With only two pawls you're placing more strain on a smaller number of pieces. Mine were chipping up the leading edge of the pawls causing them to slip rather than engage, so after fixing them twice I eBayed them and built a set of Mavic XM819's with CK hubs. Yes, they buzz like bees but I've had them two years now and have had ZERO problems.

Instead of getting the Mavic wheelset I am going to get a custom set of wheels built with the Stans ZTR 355 rims and either XT hubs or WTB Laserlight's. The cost was lower than I expected, and to add the tubless kit to the others, there isn't much difference.

Does anyone have any feedback on the WTB laserlight hubs? I am not finding anything much on them. The advantage of the WTB's seems to be weight. Difference in cost is ~ $60, weight savings is about 110g. I have seen mixed info on the WTB hub's performance.

If I'm not mistaken, those are rebadged American Classic 225 hubs. I've heard mixed reviews on them as well, but nobody I know has come out and said they were the pinnacle of MTB hubs.

If you are hearing your hubs- You are not riding hard enough. I have Mavic crossrides and don't hear a sound. Big advantage of Mavic hubs- the freehubs are rebuildable. I did a wet ride and put the wheels away afterwards. 6 months later and the freehhub was free- completely rusted up. 10 minutes later and I was back riding.

And if you want LOUD hubs- get a set of Hope Biguns. They are loud- If I ever freewheel on a smooth trail and I want to lose speed by not pedalling.

I don't know where you mountain bike but around here there's lots of variable terrain and tight corners that require coasting.

I think there are some people out there who ride slower than others...I'm not sure though. It's like they enjoy the ride and carve through the terrain, stand up...manual through stuff, and generally enjoy the "groove" versus the dirt-roadie who sits on his lazy butt and pedals the whole time.

I'm so tired of hearing this "You are not riding hard enough" rule.

I'd aggree that getting somthin custom built is better, my friend has mavic cross somthins (not max) and his rear rim is beat to hell should fail on him any day now. now thats nothin against the rim mavic makes good stuff he just uses it for to much gnar, but the problem is its a 24 spoke wheel or somthin silly, so he can't replace the rim, has to get an entire new wheel, gonna cost alot more than if he had a normal 32 spoke wheel
