Alright so as some of you may know, I am looking for a tall frameset. I found this Puegot on CL this morning and I have a verbal agreement with the seller to hold it for me until I can get to Eugene to pick it up. I have some questions: What should I pay for this bike? He said its a 70's model and the frame is in pretty good shape, not bent or anything with very little surface rust and scratches, which is just fine for me. Also, as far as fitment goes, is it all standard fit for bb and stem and stuff like that? Link below. Please help me out gents!

Thanks,
Free

I just researched a little and found out that it is a early to mid 80's frame. But the lbs said its probably either a Swiss or French square taper bb and he said to steer clear of it... Thoughts please?

Is this the one you're looking at? http://eugene.craigslist.org/bik/982973032.html

or maybe this one? http://eugene.craigslist.org/bik/963271793.html

This Schwinn looks sweet for the asking price, if it fits you: http://eugene.craigslist.org/bik/980624059.html
although it does look familiar.

The Eugene market looks a little tough to find a budget deal for a decent bike for the most part, chalk it up to the college/tech crowd there.

This one in Salem might make a better bike to ride now and flip later if that's what you're looking for:

Do you already have the rest of the parts to build it up with? I'd be happy if I had that to sell and could get the $50 for it, but I'd probably take $25, and I'd offer less than that if I was buying it, but that's just me.

Lol yeah I just actually emailed him. Thanks for the find man I appreciate it. A little more than I want to spend though....

+1 the World Sport is a better bet, cromoly frame, alloy rims.

You will have a lot more than that price into the Peugeot by the time you have a complete bike.

You are better off trolling the thrift stores if you are looking for a smokin' deal. I bought a World Sport at one of the local thrift stores two weeks ago for $12.50. Everything in really good shape, just needs tires, tubes, and shift cables. But note, I am checking thrift stores all the time. So its not like they are raining good deals.

Everyone keeps telling me to hit the thrift stores but I never have any luck...and garage sale season in not really in effect. So my only real option is friends, WOM, or CL. I will start checking TS's regularly however. You never know...

In the long run...you'll save money with the World Sport. By the time your done with the Peugeot you'll have invested double what the Schwinn cost.

The Peugeot has a lot more cache.

The Peugeot has a lot more cache.

In some neighborhoods gold teeth have 'cache' but if the light bill needs to be paid you have pass on the 'grill'.

And that is the key, regular visits. Sometimes if it's just a bike check all I have to do is peek in the window of one, but then I would have missed the VeloCheapo bike I found in a different corner of the store. Then there's the competition and the Joe Famlies who stumble upon a bike for the kids and the MaPa couple with the cabin up north who think it'd be good to have a bike up there for rides down to the creek, sometimes few to none of which have much more than a clue if it's a good deal or not even if priced below $20. Have patience, keep your eyes open, and then every once in awhile a gem will come your way. In the mean time you just keep casually looking while doing other stuff as well, don't let the search consume you, keep it fun, and so forth.

Would you rather have a bike with panache or one with cachet.

+1 Sometimes I just pull in the lot and glance in the window. Many checks take all of a couple of minutes.

And realize that the deals do not last long. So the more you stop, the better your chances. Trying to flip bikes pretty much requires you buy them cheap. TS and garage sales are where the cheap ones are.

I did spot a $50 Cannondale on CL around here a couple of days ago. Guy sold it while I was on the way to his house. Lasted a couple of hours.

Lol that happened to me too on a few bikes... I have no patience for people who sell from under me.
