Sometimes at night, but during the daytime i rely on hearing too much if a car is approaching from behind (on busy roads of course). When going up hills i usually get a little song or jingle or string of nonsense i made up looping through my head.

Yes. I have a Creative Zen Stone Plus 2GB. I use the included earbud things, the left one of which has broken (cable snappage) but that's fine, as I only use the right bud anyway.

It has radio and MP3 abilities, which is kickass as I enjoy listening to the radio at times.

Behind the neck. They stay on well and don't get in the way of my helmet at all. Plus they help keep my ears warm in the cold.

Ear bud people, I don't know the truth of this because i can't use ear buds, but i've read in many places that only wearing one messes with your hearing more than just keeping both on but at a low volume. I'm not sure why, or if its true, but figured i'd let some people know.

I use something like this (I've found generic versions for as little as $5 locally):
http://portables.about.com/b/2005/06/29/new-portable-ipod-speaker-case-from-fid.htm

Very simple device, built in speaker, etc, secured on the handlebars of my road bike. I like to have something to listen to, but don't think headphones/earbuds are safe/responsible on a bike.

Some people I ride with just listen to running/exercise podcasts, to give them a cadence. (PodRunner on iTunes, for example)

Not usually, I rely alot on my ears to find cars. Yet, when I do, its with crappy skullcandies, don't ever buy them.

I used to in the city but had way too many close calls with traffic to want to continue. Hell, I raced an alleycat with earbuds in both ears... not recommended at all.

On long solo rides on country roads, music is nice to keep company, but my iPod broke awhile ago so I listen to the sounds of silence or whatever song is stuck in my head instead. All in all, I'd go back to music on rural road rides but never again in the city...

I used to until I lost my iPod...but that's another story.

I actually took the earbuds and tie strapped (small tie) to the adjustable helmet band, then coiled the remaining wire around one of the moldings in the back. I then attached the iPod to the back of the adjustable band.

With the buds tie strapped, I pointed the buds down towards my ear. You don't get all the bass as if they are in your ear, but you get to hear music and all the other critical noises around you. Also, you don't have to worry about where you ear buds are, they are always on the helmet. Just need another pair if you want to hear music without a helmet....

...although, wearing a helmet indoors like a library while wearing a helmet can have advantages....:wtf:
if I can remember, I will take a picture and post it. I haven't had any problems in Sausalito yet...knock on wood....

You had to go there? The poll asks nothing about that so if you have a problem with the topic at hand please open your own thread and discuss it with people who want to do so.

I use the ear buds that hold on to the whole ear as mentioned already, my ears can't hold the stock Ipod ear buds cause they fall out too easy.

I traded some books for these brilliant little rubbery in-ear Sennheisers with a friend. They're really amazing. They stay in, have great sound, and block out all other sound; making me more prone to get run over by an 18-wheeler or at least ignorant of 12-year olds yelling "do a skid, you hipster loser!" FTW!

I started listening ever since I got a refurbed iPod not too long ago.

Sometimes I'll use the behind the neck earphones but my Apple earbuds are great for going under my bavaclava. I feel comfortable riding and listening to music, as I can still hear most of the cars around me and whatnot.

I had them too and it was riding in complete silence! Super scary. like semi's coulda honked 2 inches from me and I wouldn't have heard it. also not good for sirens which I think are one variable that even a great rider can't always account for as far as running lights and such. Now I ride sometimes with some cheapie buds but low volume and half in my ear.

I use in-ear Skull Candy earphones. They are cheap and don't fall out of my ears (particularly when riding fast or against wind) like the ones that come with iPhones do (Haha ... I almost said "stock" ... bike parts are still on the mind ...). The bad thing is that I can't answer calls with them coz they lack a mic.

Incidentally, if you like bright anodized colors, the Skull Candy earphones kind of match the colors you normally see anodized on a bike ... ?

I bought my e2c's because I used to commute on the train (it was too long, and too under water to ride my bike) and they worked well at keeping the train noises out. They also kinda sucked in terms of sound quality.

When I moved, i realized I had to abandon my old commuting habits, like listening to music (and reading books) because they distracted me enough that I could get into trouble. Even with different ear buds, and a more open design the music is still a distraction that I should live without.

Of course, I still , on occasion, ride with my new sony ex55s, which cost a quarter of my e2cs, sound twice as good, and seal 90% as well.

sometimes... i used to use some etymotic er-6i, but i'm going to try out some koss portapros. they're open-air so you can hear your surroundings, though i'm not sure how it will fair when you're out in noisy traffic.

JacoKierkegaard
01-07-09, 08:51 PM
I do if I'm riding bike paths or sidewalks. If I'm on roads, I either leave one bud out so I can still get some sound from my surroundings or I forgo the music altogether.

I have Sony Fontopia earbuds. Good sound, and they do a good job blocking out outside noise, which is great for listening, but not for keeping an ear out for your surroundings. I'd be too scared to ride with both in.

Cheap-o Phillips clip behind ear phones. Cheap ass in ear ipod buds are sucky back ups. Work great even when you get sweaty. Running with an iPhone but I decline to answer the phone when it comes in over the tunes. Music is enough....

Regular iPod headphones. Only one or none in traffic, but if it's pretty dead, I will have both in. Sight will always be a more reliable sense than hearing.

Do you have any issues with helmet fit (if you wear one) or compatibility with sunglasses (if you wear one)?

These are the ones I was talking about, got em at best buy for $15 and they're about a year old and have survived many training miles.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/djxdkinya/Hosting/8001324_sa.jpg

And they work just fine with a road helmet and sunglasses.

I don't wear headphones while riding. I think it's too dangerous to not have your ears at the ready when riding in the city.

when my iPod isn't dead i rock it. i use some really old (like 5 0r 6 years old) Koss ear buds. i got them in college for like $30, and they still work great. they are pretty damn compfy, and well broken in so i never tossed them. some times i only wear one bud, depending on where i am riding. but if you keep the volume down you can still hear a lot.

Earbuds are pretty bad especially in high traffic, or also the helmet rubbing against them and knocking them out.

Before I lost my headphones/ipod, I'd listen to music a lot cruising around brooklyn, across bridges, or in manhattan riverside, but not in the thick of the city.

This may vary from state to state, but I'm pretty sure that here in NY, it's illegal to ride a bicycle with headphones in/on both ears. Of course, it's also illegal to run a red light, but that never stopped anyone.

I rock the Skullcandy Ink'd phones, but not while riding.

Bose, Nano (16g).

I want to try noise canceling headphones now, just to collect goats in my backyard.

Due to the overwhelming number of people who can't follow directions, I seriously fear for my children's future.
