General Cycling Discussion - Well excuse me!

So I just nipped down to my LBS to get something. ON the ride home there's this cop with a radar-gun monitoring everyone's speed. Of course, he takes a "shot" at me, and then calls out "come on, you can go faster than that!".

I hope that he's the one writing it out the day I get that speeding ticket that I'm framing.

Just remind him you can probably whup his butt on a bike then treat him to some Krispy Kremes. Works every time.

You should of said hold on. All give that one more go and took another pass at the radar-gun. You know I would have! That would be so cool to show to friends and coworkers. (SUCKERS!)

The frame would have to be in plated gold or yellow.

I don't know. I would have taken that for a pretty cool cop. Maybe he rides and appreciates your riding...

As for Whupping his butt...the only person that would probably care in that race is you. Its really not that important to anyone else.

I definately would have tried to get a max speed though. Might be cool to pass around, although I doubt I could go very fast on a 42 pound dh bike haha

One of my dad's co-workers got a speeding ticket going down Mt. Soledad. I think he said he was going around 60mph and the speed limit is 50mph.

To have a speeding ticket from your bike hanging on your wall would be very cool. You never see any motorists with their speeding tickets on their walls do you :D

I usually do, but my LBS isn't far enough away for me to get properly warmed up, so any sprint I try on that ride is going to be pretty lame at the best of times.

There's a hill north of Auckland called the Kaukapakapa Hill (Cow cop a cop a) and it is open road limit.....100kmh. There is an auckland racer somewhere with a ticket on his wall with 127kmh on it. An astonished cop got him on the ol radar.

No idea -- nor do I care, given that I don't have a car, so car insurance isn't a problem for me.

Speeding ticket is a speding ticket. If your in another person's car and get one it goes on your record as would a bike.

what if you dont have ID on you when you get the ticket? why not have them write a ticket to john smith of kissmyass court, Beverly hills CA, 90210?

Because they are likly to take your bike and when you come get it{if they dont take you with it** you'll have your id.

Actually there was a case reported in last Saturday's Courier Mail where a cyclist was booked, and had the demerit points recorded on his license. He argued the case though, and got the points back. It turned out the issuing officer was incorrect in doing so at the time the ticket was written. Imagine: a police officer that isn't clear on the road rules regarding cyclists - Who'da thunk it..

So, yes you will get fined like anyone else, but it doesn't count against your driving license. This is the case for Queensland. Ymmv.

I got a traffic ticket last Good friday, riding my bike and its $110.00 fine, and I am contesting the ticket, and the clerk said that I will hear from them in September with a mail notification when the hearing will be in the meantime I am hoping that the motorcycle cop will just fade away

I got a verbal warning when I was doing sprint repeats in a school zone...and on campus I imagine I came pretty close to a DUI for riding my bike back from a party with an open bottle of scotch, but the cop was on foot...

If you got a speeding ticket on a bike, I bet you could very easily get out of it by going to court. Not only do you not have a licence or a registered vehicle, but bikes aren't legally required to have a speedo so you could have no idea how fast you're going.

I don't know how well the Not Legally Required defence would hold up, but the C'mon Yer Honour, Do You Really Think Anyone Could Go That Fast On A Bicycle defence might.

I had almost the same thing happen to me on the way to work a little over a year ago. He was standing on the side of the road with his radar gun checking cars as they went by. It was a slight uphill and a 25 mph zone, so there was no way I was worried about me speeding. He did point the gun at me, but he was nice about it. After he checked my speed, he gave me a thumbs up and said "Pretty good", which was total BS because I was on a loaded mountain bike going uphill... I was probably only going 12 or 13 mph.

I did have another situation near my house at the end of a ride, but this time it was on a down hill. I came around a corner in a 25 mph zone and the cop was parked on the side of the road (basic speed trap). I looked down and saw that I was going 21mph, so I started pedalling to see if I could get close to 25, but by that time the road was leveling out so I couldn't get much more than 21 mph... plus I had to turn right after where the cop was parked so I had to brake right after that.

they'll probably ask for your name, and other info and crosscheck with what they have on your computer. i wouldnt want to be one to play games with cops

Why would anyone want to get out of it? I'd be paying it on the spot, taking it to the picture framers, hanging it on my wall and showing it to my friends.

Sounds ok too me. Better than the cop directing traffic at a school that told me to slow it down! No one was in the immediate area, children or adults, just him and he was a safe distance. I looked at the computer and said what are you talking about? This is a 25mph school zone and I already slowed to 11mph! He looked shocked.

He was just being a jerk. Probably got school guard duty for screwing something up.

In Australia, the ticketing cop doesn't appear at the court house. The Police have representatives that act as the prosecution, one cop will hear hundreds of cases per week. A cyclist can get demerit points if he has a drivers licence, in South Australia.
