New York City, which has been working hard to promote cycling of late, has now proposed "bicycle parking rules that could be among the toughest in the nation, requiring one secure bike parking space for every two units in new apartment buildings and one space for every 7,500 square feet in new office buildings."

I'll believe it when I see it; also, it's critical that this apply to existing as well as new construction, or it means practically nothing.

My home depot has 120 bike spaces or 60 U racks due to parking regs.

It is the most absurd thing i have seen.

OH NO! That means they are going to start building MORE bike racks. We don't need more bike racks, trust me, the blue hybrid in the picture is either stolen or missing the rear wheel!

Usually, if well written, these types of ordinances require two types of bike parking, short-term w/in X distance from the building entrance for customers, and more secure long-term bike parking for employees, typically inside the building's 'structured' parking areas, in a designated storeroom of some type or outside the building with enhanced security features.

Neither of those links is working (for me at this point in time on my current internet connection). The first does return a web page, but it is completely empty. The second does not return anything other than a 404 page not found error. The root www.portlandonline.com does return a normal looking page. I tried the first link in both FireFox 3.0.5 and Microsoft IE7.

A step in the right direction for NYC.

I believe Vancouver BC has exemplary bike parking requirements in its building codes.

Seattle is SLOWLY going onboard with replacing some on street auto parking with bike parking racks. a long uphill process but one destined to grow here IMO.

My local Home Depot has 6 bike parking spaces... and the local grocery store has NONE... zip nada.

there's a separate bill covering existing buildings, basically requires landlords to allow bikes inside the building unless there's a compelling reason to not have them.

our bldg changed managment companies a while back and I now have to go in though the service entrance, but they've been pretty good about setting up bike racks in empty spaces and even have pumps chained to them.

and the local grocery store has NONE... zip nada.

that's a grocery store I would never patronize
