General Cycling Discussion - Real time chat is up, somewhat.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have put up a real time chat up, click on the link "IRC Chat" at the bottom of each page (above the webtrends button). If you like it, I'll register a copy, and integrate it better into the forums.
Joe I have looked in on the new live chat facility , (first in I think!**
looks good , but . Question? How do you activate it , I typed in my first sentence and nothing happened , is that because no one there as a recipient? or just my ignorance!!

Please don't integrate it too much - IRC software is on my work's site prohibited list and I'd rather not lose access to the whole site...

I got the chat up - no one was there, and I then minimized it, and, poof, it went completely away. When I reclicked on IRC chat, nothing happened?? Could not find the minimized button for IRC???

i assume the chat room isn't working yet because it's not been subscribed to yet?

Joe, first let me say that I don't know squat about chat, IRC, etc.
Second, where is the "IRC Chat" link? I don't see it at the bottom of any page and I don't see the webtrends button either.

Thanks.

Will, did you get the logging into server message? Once in chat, you should see the text * Willc enters, once you recive that, your in, and you should beable to chat.
Buddy, do you recive an error message?
Richard, understood, by integrating furter, i was thinking about putting a link on the main index page, with current users in chat (like current users online.)
Denver, i dont know what to tell you, it should act just like any other window, i just tried to minimize it myself, and it worked fine.
Cabledonut, it works (or it should work!), but after each message, it has a subscribe message..
Ron, at the bottom of this page you should see the chat link, and a page counter button. It at the bottom of each page.

Sadly, thats normal, unless i register the software ($50)... Overall, do you guys like the layout / software?
Doesn't work for me. I installed the applet, but when I try connecting, it tells me that D*Alex has already been taken, then it proceeds to add a whole bunch of succesively larger numbers after my nickname. I try to change the name, but it keeps on trying the old one, with bigger and bigger numbers. I gave up when it hit 7 digits after my name.
What a pain in the @r$e!!

I can't get in either, but I suspect it's a firewall issue on the LAN here at work. I get an 'unable to connect to server' message. I haven't tried it at home yet.
Any suggestions on how to get IRC to beat the firewall?

Ahh, it looks like i'll need to find a different server, or network. Currently, it goes to EFnet. Some 30,000 people are online at any time, im sure there will be username conflicts. I'll work on that tonite.
Allister, no clue, sorry!
Oh, that's why. My server blocks most IRC connections. I can't remember which connection they DO allow, but I know that it's not effnet. Oh, well.

I got it working, but is anyone there? Is there some way to signal to current online users that you want to chat, besides email?

I had to take a rather roundabout way to get into chat. I'm on a Mac, and using IE I never got past the connecting message. I switched to Netscape and had the same result. I have a Windows emulator on this machine, so I went into it and then was able to get in through IE. After which was able to chat with ahuman, Joe, nebill, and Ba-Dg-Er. Then I got punted so hard it took five minutes to work my way back in.

I have just changed server from efnet to a private server at mit.edu (irc-2.mit.edu). Theres only a handfull of users on this server, so we should have no username conflicts what so ever.
I have the same problem as UncaStewart. On a mac with netscape I got a blank window when I tried to log in. With IE I wasn't able to get past the "connecting" message. It's a macuser's life!

I just went back into the chat room after the down time, don't ask me why as I was the only user currently on line !! , But what is that trivia thing all about ?????? , It's giving me answers to questions that have not been asked !! what in the name of 2.125 tires is this all about ???? is this gonna be there every time I go in there ?? I hope not !!

Aww, i missed the trivia bot! :)
As an alternative, we could create a chat channel in IRC on a chat network of our choice. As a somewhat reformed chat addict, I highly recommend Superchat (www.superchat.org). It has a web chat interface (java) which works well and of course it's easily accessible using normal IRC chat software such as mIRC or PIRCH or what have you. The traffic on that network is nowhere near as heavy as EFNET (but then..that is the biggest network of all). You can also put in a link from here, Joe. I've done it from other sites I've built.
Once it's created, it's there for everyones use.
And best of all of course...it's free!
Just my thoughts...
Feet first and forward!

Like UncaStuart I’m on a Mac/IE and it doesn’t work. It welcomes me and I can write in different colors (cool!!!) but nothing comes up in the main window above.
 Now if I had read all of the messages before posting my last...but NOOOOOO....
I did the post because the chat won't open for me either, and I don't have a clue as to why. I'm on a dialup, so no firewalls or other such impediments.
Joe, can you post the path/server name so that I can perhaps get there using mIRC?
Thanks and sorry for jumping to conclusions.

I'll add some more server info, with links to IRC software, and requirements for java chat on the welcome page. As badger said, the server is irc-2.mit.edu, port 6667, chan #bikeforums
