Hello all...
I just walked 3 miles home. Never fun.
Here is the situation. I am running Campagnolo Chorus compact carbon cranks on my cross bike with a specialities TA 42t ring and a wetzikon chainring guard by the folks at cyclocrossworld.com. Both parts were purchased from them. The chainring guard is advertised as 110 bcd, as are campy compact cranks. That been said, when i installed the guard, i noticed it did not sit well with the cranks, and i ended up having to file out one of the chainring bolt holes into an oval to make it work, as the bolt that threads into the crank arm spider was going in at an angle and threatening to cross thread the crank itself. This worked fine for a while, though tonight while climbing a hill i heard a wierd noise and my cranks slipped forward. I continued to ride for a half mile till I looked down and noticed that my chainring was wobbling from side to side. I had stripped out 3 chainring bolts simultaneously. At this point I walked home. Now that I am home, I have compared the chainring guard to the original chainrings from the crank and the holes do NOT line up. I looked up the cranks in QBP, and I did notice a little blurb about how campy's 110 bcd is non standard. Perhaps its 111 or some bull **** like that, its campy, who knows.
Anyway, the chainring guards from cyclocrossworld.com ARE NOT compatible with campy compact cranks. I am sure that the Wetzikon guards are truly 110 bcd, but I wish there was some mention of the fact that they were not campy compatible on their site, i could have damaged my crank, or myself. I would encourage people using Campagnolo compact cranks to not use a bash guard, as I doubt that there are any made specifically for those cranks at this time. Anyway, If I have some free time tomorrow I'll give the folks at cx world.com a call and let them know, hopefully they will make a campy compact specific version of their guard, as I have no ft derailleur braze ons on my frame and like my single ring set up with a guard.
Im bummed to have my cross bike out of comission for a while, as it is my primary ride for both exercize and commuting. back to the 3 speed for a while.
