This year I've done some experimenting in an attempt to deal with issues from past winters.
The switch to a road bike with Nokian A10 studded tires has not gone so well.
The use of KMC Z51 Rustbuster chain, however, has been a mildly pleasant surprise so far, - given that I wasn't expecting much. In short riding without fenders and doing no maintenance on the chain at all during the month of December, the KMC chain shows no sign of rust.
Now, I'm not going to tell that this is an awesome high quality chain. It isn't. It has however done for me what I had hoped. The chain looks clean and so does the rear sprocket and rear rim, - which normally would have had rust colored juice splattered and dried on it by now.
Two problems with the chain:
1. It seems a little wide for 7 speed drivetrains
2. The supplied missing link connector is single use and reusing pins via chain tool supposedly weakens them
KMC makes higher end RustBuster chains too.
Over the New Years weekend, I gave the bike a good cleaning and put my fenders on I got for Xmas. I added a nice long mud flap to the front fender which so far has kept the junk off the BB and drive train, so I suspect this chain may stay rust free for the whole season. :thumb:
