I was coming home from work earlier, flying down Division when I heard a sudden loud *SNAP* and came to a stop. My chainring had cracked in half, and took part of the chain with it! I never did find them, either. Now, I'm running 4-arm 104 BCD shimano something (deore?) cranks. Wouldn't be my first choice now, but I didn't know better when I picked the parts out at the shop a yearish ago (only knew 70s-80s road bike stuff at the time), and the shop doesn't deal with much FG stuff.

Does anybody know of any non-aluminum chainrings available in 4-arm / 104 BCD? Preferably up around 42-44 tooth. I have a spare chainring, but it's aluminum, I'm a clydesdale, it's hilly here, and I'm eyeing it with considerable suspicion. I'm going to see if I can swap the spare ring out for another on Monday, but the suspense is killing me. At least it didn't happen while I was on the way to my exams on Monday, though...

I live in Grand Rapids when I'm not at school actually. I know Division quite well... go see Jim at Village Cycle on 44th and Kalamazoo. Jim and Kevin are both avid singlespeed commuters and can get you a good setup or recommend one to you. I haven't found anymore knowledgeable bikeshop employees anywhere.

Oh if you do go, tell them Jon in Waco, TX sent you in!

I couldn't find the rest of the chainring! I think it shattered! ;)

I think I'll just get some bombproof cranks and quit worrying. I didn't get hurt, so no problem.

Edit: I should probably tell the 63xc people to mention it in their equipment FAQ or something though. The problem came from naively mixing fixed-gear and mtb equipment.

No need to scrap the alu chainrings. The shomaNO ring you were using on that crank was just garbage. if you plan to run singlespeed think about DH level stuff, or BMX cranks. That should hold up under you.

Check out the alloy rings from Salsa Cycles they are pretty beefy. They are thicker than most rings where they attach and are machined down at the teeth. These are road rings but they come in 104 BCD and you can get the matching ring guard. Spot Brand also make nice strong chainrings.
