Winter Cycling - Thoughts on a kickstand for icebike?

I've been weighing the possibilities of installing a kickstand on my icebike, aka mountain-bike-gussied-up-for-winter. I have a couple of other bikes--summer use only--that have them and I really like the convenience, especially when I need to load the basket/panniers or am running around town doing errands. But I was weaned on mountain bikes, where kickstands are not just uncool, they're downright dangerous. Now that I've converted a mountain bike for winter use--I use it for mainly for errands but also get out for some trail riding--I'm wondering if any of you have any experience and could share the pros and cons of having a kickstand for winter use under different kinds of conditions, and what kinds you might suggest were I to move forward with one.

it collects a lot of snow, dirt and salt, that's for sure.
personally, with a 700c cross/touring bike I haven't had any problems going on bike trails with a kickstand that mounts to the rear triangle.

You might want a studded kickstand ;-)

I vote no. One year, I put a kickstand on my campus commuter for convenience's sake, and between water/snow/ice and rock salt it got all gnarly and rusted and not only got stuck in one position, but had to be sawed off the bike since the bolt corroded to the kickstand itself.

In other words, if you buy a kickstand, don't buy the absolute cheapest thing available. :-) Try to get on that's not made out of non-stainless steel! :-)
