I've planned routes in a few of these sites (mapmyride and veloroutes) and have a little bit of a feel for the limitations in terms of total elevation gain and grade. The sites seem to do an ok and somewhat consistent job with respect to distance, elevation and elevation gain, but grade seems questionable. I'm particular concerned about grade since there is a big difference in being able to climb all day on a 4-5% grade versus handling 1/2 mile at 11%. Any opinions/observations as to which of the various sites seems to do the best job in this area?

As far as I know, all of the national-level freebie mapping web sites really suck for gradient over short distances and cumulative elevation gain in hilly areas. There are some better systems like klimb.org, but they only have coverage in limited areas.

I use Route Slip....if I want to calculate gradient, I just export the file to Excel and calculate till my heart is content.

When I google Route slip and wind up at mapmyride. Still looking for a way in this site to export elevation data to xls. I figure it out.
