Local weather forecast (but not The Weather Channel) is showing bitter cold moving into the upper Midwest next week. Here in Madison three straight nights of lows from -14 to -16, highs around -5. Can't remember if it is going to be Tues-Thurs or Wed-Fri.
This is after tomorrow's snowfall of 6"-9".
So who's going to be out riding in it?
Not I.

In one or two weeks I'll be riding my quad 10 miles out onto Lake Erie to fish for huge walleyes. Let's see some of you gloating fair weather guys do that!

I think you should also cut a hole in the ice and jump in similar to what Ulrich did when he would go bear hunting with Vino in Khazakstan to prepare for the tour.:D

Next week forecasts teens and single digit highs, and single digit negative lows. Snow is on the way. Downright balmy!
Yes, I will be riding in this.

On New Year's Day the Cleveland Triathlon Club did just that, and it was shown on the local news. The image of guys wearing Mankini's in 27 degree temps, romping in the Lake Erie surf with the snow covered beach is still etched in my mind.

The weather will break over here on Sunday- So rain is expected on Monday and into the 50's.
Normal riding will be resumed- Or may be Sunday if I can defrost the bike.

Better hold onto your butt ... they are downgrading those forecasts. Check Accuweather. Right now their forecasts for Minneapolis are:
Tuesday high 1, low -4
Wed high -3, low -10
Thur high 5, low -8
Fri high 10, low -8
And it could be colder. An Arctic air mass is moving our way.

I remind my mother, who lives in Florida, that when it is -15 F, that is 47 degrees below freezing. She thinks it is bitter cold when there is a frost on the grass.
Coldest it has been since I moved here in '89 was -28 F, or 60 degrees below freezing point. That was very, very cold. I walked out in it, wearing a short sleeve shirt, just to experience how cold it was. Didn't stay out long.

Maybe we shouldn't be planning on spending trillions of dollars to prevent global warming?
Were getting the 5 to 9 inches a snow tonight and tommrow ! Then we go in to a serious deep freeze below zero crap !!!!!! And NO I won"t be riding in it. I will just go to the gym when the roads clear :( Have faith End a March it a be decent again here in Michigan .

Of course the reason the weather will be high over the weekend is Santa Ana winds... I doubt you will be riding then!
For folks who don't know, Santa Anas are our "snow"!

Just finished snowblowing the driveway for the 6th time so far this winter. We got 7"-8".
A balmy 20 on Saturday and 25 on Sunday. Will be getting out to enjoy it.
Saturday is our big Bike Swap Meet in Madison. Always lots of goodies there at low prices.

We only got about an inch for this snow. Only about a foot on the ground right now. But that still means I won't be out riding for a while. It never gets quite warm enough to melt the ice and snow on the roads. I can ride when it's cold, but the snow does me in. I really, really, really hate winter.

Maybe I'll wear one of my bike trail shirts ... like my Root River Trail or Sugar River Trail shirts.
I heard it was about 5 F in Big Bear around last weekend... that's about 90 minutes from us, here in sunny Southern California.

I'd appreciate "real" snow much more. Not sure if we'll be riding in the morning... probably not if the gusts are 70-80 mph as predicted.

Come on, grow a back bone there fellow sunshine stater. If Miss Gulch can do it you can; hell, she did it carrying an "ugly little dog".
That's me, watching Miss Gulch ride by my house; it is a pic from my younger days when I was into cross dressing:lol:

I'll probably go take a spin in the sub-zero but probably only 5 miles or so just to test out some clothing for it.

I need one more 50 degree day to spray the last color onto the dark side bike. I can hardly wait to pull off the masking tape to see how it looks. Then about a month for the paint to totally cure before I wax and reassemble it.
I'm also waiting for my rim to come in so I can lace up my Chris King front wheel. I don't mind winter so much if I can get enough projects going but it can sure get expensive.

No riding today, although it did break 20. Lots of snow & ice everywhere.
But went to the bike swap meet. Lots of fun. There were some very good deals there on bikes & frames. Saw a Gunnar Rock Hound frame for $500, Bridgestone RB-1 for $200, and many other steel frames.
I picked up a Louis Garneau bike helmet for my wife, a Pitbull U-bolt lock for my daughter, a new pair of Sun Ringle ZuZu spiked platform pedals, 2 water bottles, a Tektro front & back brake set, a coil-spring saddle for my wife, two bottles of Bullfrog sunscreen, and a slightly used pair of Cane Creek ergo bar ends for a grand total of $71.
From an on-line discounter, the pedals and helmet would normally cost about $80.
I couldn't believe how many people were at the swap meet. Much bigger crowd that the last two. Several hundred shoppers while I was there.

What size was the RB-1? With or without the fork? What vintage?

Was looking forward to the swap meet. Then the weather hit. Spent all morning relocating snow drifts. Oh, well. I guess there will be more swap meets. I won't add to my disappointment by asking if you saw any ...?

It looked like it was in very good condition. He said he purchased it new in 1990. It did not have a fork, which is why he was having a hard time selling it. I didn't get his name would have no idea of how to contact him. I think he told me it was a 62, but he might have said 60.

Maybe if each one of us did our part and popped one CO2 cartridge into the atmosphere, it would get a little warmer around here.
My personal record was to waste four trying to change one flat tire.
Hey Allegheny, so you or anyone else on this thread uses studded tires? Thinking of trying a pair. I'm getting cabin fever really bad! Snowshoes and X Country skiis are OK, but miss the bike. I've been thinking of riding some of our frozen lakes if studs work as good as some say!?! Maybe pull a portable ice house behind!

This is my first winter as a cyclist and I am much more of a winter "skeptic" than ever before. Never minded winter much before... but now I sure do. At the same time I absolutely hate, abhor and detest high heat and humidity, so I guess there's a good side to living north of the M-D Line!

Go for the studded tires!
No reason to hang the bike in the winter.
But they are not the magic bullet to snow and ice.
With my Nokias I still slip some on ice, but the studs allow for correction before tumbling.
Face winter and be prepared for it.
That's awesome RepWI. Best of both (winter) worlds!
Maybe tack a flag on that overhang

New record low temperature for International Falls, MN - 40 below F.
Embarrass, MN is at -44 below F. (Their record low in 1996 was -57 below F.)

Definitley cold up there! The all time record low temp in MN is -60 below recorded on Feb 2, 1996 in Tower, MN. I was in nearby Ely that weekend and it was not fun. I recall that a Twin Cities station was in Tower watching the thermometer and doing a live report.

I used to take our kids outside in the extreme cold to blow bubbles. The bubble drfits along for a few feet then drops like a rock when it freezes. You can actually pick it up from the ground.
Now that they're older, I'm out there by myself doing this kind of stuff . . .

A couple years ago I pulled an abondoned MTB from a dumpster with the intention of using it to pull my clam style shanty on lakes that prohibit gas powered quads. I purchased studded tires for it and thought thru the tow hitch/attachment. The first time out, was on the pond in my back yard, and it was also the last time. The tires would fill up with snow and the studs would only scrape the ice allowing me to fall over. Even after I got the rig moving the bike would suddenly kick out causing me to fall over. It was nearly the same experiance as my learning to ride the rollers. Incidently, it is hard to pedal a bike while wearing the felt pack boots needed to stay out on the ice all day.
It was a lot of fun just riding the bike on the lake and not pulling anything. I didn't fall any less, I just fell in a more predictable manner.

I use 700cx32 Kenda Klondikes @ $65 each. I don't have any experience with other studded tires but these are great. I feel really safe on them. From a training standpoint, riding in the winter on snow/ice and with these knobby tires is about 1.75 - 2 times as hard as riding in the summer on road slicks. I probably only average 12-13 miles per hour. I'll tell you what, though, it beats the heck out of riding the couch.
I wear a head sock (balaclava), ski helmet, and ski goggles, and that really keeps my head warm.
Do it!

I do as well. I must admit though, that I find myself turning my back on all the people in the grocery store as I, "dress". I am finding myself feeling like I am stripped down to my underwear as I dress for the cold wind as people pass me by in only winter coats gloves and simple hats. :)
