Friend of mine in Rock Hill, SC (near Charlotte, NC) would like to get on a bike but doesn't have any idea how to get one. Anybody know if there's a bike co-op or other sellers of fixed-up old bikes (besides Craigslist) in the area? Any other helpful information for a new rider who wants to start slowly?

Any help is much appreciated :)

If your friend doesn't know what to get (or what size either I'm guessing) why go to a coop? At a bike shop they can tell him what size he'll need and fit him to the bike of his choice. A coop will most likely only get him the bike of his choice based on his budget, color preference, etc.

Has he checked with these guys?

She's a little short on cash and not sure she's going to keep riding. I did send links to both shops, I think, and suggested she look around a bit. Thanks for the help :)

Suggest that she check out "Trips For Kids" just north of uptown Charlotte. They repair donated bikes, sell them and use the proceeds to fund their bicycling programs for children. The last time I was there they had a good selection of used bicycles, and the volunteers were very friendly and helpful. The list some of their fancier bikes online, but you really need to visit the shop to see everything:

If your friend buys one of their bikes and later decides that she is done with it, she can re-donate it back to them.
