Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Saturday's Wind Forecast. Would You Ride?

Calling for 40 mph winds, maybe 70 mph gusts. Would you?

I live in the north part of Los Angeles and today it was pretty dang windy, I did not have time to ride but the wind pushed my F-350 truck all over the road. Tomorrow's gonna be worse? Yeah, I'm gonna ride! It's gonna be 80 degrees this weekend! Somebody on the roadie forum once said "make peace with the wind and you'll ride much more often". I used to really hate the wind, but I now I look at my bottom bracket and just grind away.

That is some serious gusts. I would be afraid a cross wind would knock me over.

Gusts strong enough to cause drivers to swerve because their car is being blown around, and sustained winds strong enough to push (even a Clydesdale) cyclist around?

You have fun with that. I'd stick to a bike path, well away from any cars.

Yup, like the rain.:D I've gone out to ride when the forecast says 60 mph. Ends up a huge 10 mph wind and empty trail!:P


Of course only on the trail I won't ride with cars in big winds!:eek:

Funny thing about the wind. While blowing by another ride, you've got time to find out what the other ate for dinner, what their kids' names are, their age, their cycling history and other good stuff while whizzing by!:D

Earlier this week I was out trotting around in 55mph gusts. It isn't a picnic, and you will be in even worse conditions. I would feel silly telling you how to prepare, but obviously good eye protection is essential. You will also be encountering a lot of debris since that kind of wind stirs everything up.

I'm planning on doing Montrose. I'll be well protected from the wind in the pack (can get over 200-riders sometimes!). However, I am open to abandoning the riding idea if winds are really nutty!! :D

I rode in 40 MPH winds this week. Much more than that I'm not too trusting.

Depends on which direction its blowing vs which direction I'm going. :D

But generally speaking, 40 mph winds with gusts of 70, blowing in my face with grit and dirt, and slowing me down to a gasping wobble, would equal......(well lets see here......a few calculations).....err,...would equal.......

No, I wouldn't. Winds the past two days here have been strong enough to bring down sizable tree limbs.

Personally I'd prefer that you DON'T ride under the conditions you describe. I'm concerned about your safety.

I'd ride with those wind conditions, for the sheer pleasure of riding back withe that wind to my back. You will haul some serious butt.

Clear skys down here. Real pretty baby blue. Rode this morning on my daily 10-mile bike path quickie but it was still a little cool (high 50's). My beautiful lugged steel 'Centurian' was smooth and flawless, and the birds were singing.

I was thinking it was supposed to be in the 50's here. Got up this morning and it was 33 degrees with 20 mph winds. I got in 24 miles, though, just didn't make very good time coming back. Surprisingly, I saw more other riders out than I normally do when it's nice.

Not sure how Beanz did, but I did ride on the SART (his stomping grounds) for about a mile. Very little wind to speak of for my entire 47 miles. So much for weather forecasters :rolleyes: Of course, driving home was an adventure as I hit the winds on the way.

I rode 13 miles in similar conditions at the end of 2008 (Dec. 30 actually) to hit my mileage goal for the year. It was truly miserable and dangerous. I did it on the MUP and the upwind leg was scary and not at all fun. I was glad for my weight to hold me down. The return was scary too... accelerating through 18mph while coasting and needing to drag the brakes was a big thrill!

Recommendation: stay away from trees, stay away from cars, stick close to home and do loops to get your miles.

But, if the day was getting on and the wind didn't get high, I might go and do loops around the neighborhood.

How were the winds in SFV? I often ride with SFVBC. Driving home on the 210 north out of Pasadena around 12-1pm, I notice huge clouds of dust in the air to the north and west (Sylmar/North Hills -ish) and was getting blown all over the road on the freeway.

Very windy with lots of crap blowing around with the wind.
I live across the street from CSUN (Nordoff and Lindley) and have been on a few rides with the SFVBC and I don't think going on a 25/30 mile ride would be much fun or healthy in this wind.

I rode my MTB here in Santa Clarita today, it was windy but nothing too dramatic. I talked to a guy with a pony tail on a road bike about a new bike path I had just ridden. Did about 13 miles, it was kinda cold...
