Mountain Biking - Easton Frames/Bikes? Expensive?

Ran into some dude on teh mtn today. He wa pushing his bike up the hill. The bike was painted flourescent green and pink. I thought it was a RainbowBrite Target store bike at first sight!:D

I stopped to talk to the guy then he asked about the difference between our bikes. Mine is a Trek 8000. Good enough for me but I know others that think it's a tank. Then he said he bought it at a storage sale or similar. I could then see thru the paint and noticed the XT components.:eek:

He said he had called Easton to price his find but they said they didn't sell bikes, only frames but they couldn't price the bike as they were all custom built. I picked up the bike and it was heavier than my 8000. He said he was figuring on $3000, I don't think so but he liked the sound of it:D


I couldn't piece together the entire story, I think he was delerious from pushing the bike up the mtn!:D

So I figure I'd ask here about the quality of Easton frames and or bikes. Anybody?

Easton doesn't make bikes.

However, they make tubing that other companies then make into bikes.

Without knowing the particular brand/model of his bike, not much to tell you. A company can make a crappy bike or an incredible bike out of Easton tubes. Just depends on what they do. They supply tubes to a lot of companies and industries. Light or heavy, may not have been the frames. Frames tend to be the lighter part, overall, in complete bike weight.

Cool, now that I think about it, maybe I knew that long ago in another world. One of the only things that cold be seen thru the paint was a big Easton label. Just the tubing!:thumb:

Many, many bike companies use Easton tubes. Some good, some bad. Just because the tube says Easton on it is not indicitive of a good bike.

I've had a couple of frames that used the Easton tubing, one of them was a kona and the other was a Rocky Mountain. I don't want another bike with Easton tubing, I'm more of a 4130 person these days.

Actually given certain circumstances, there is the chance I'll have an aluminum framed bike again in the future. Just that right now I have alot of faith in my steel framed dmr.

I don't want another bike with Easton tubing, I'm more of a 4130 person these days.

FWIW, I'm sticking with steel or ti for hardtails and anything on the road.

For steel FS, most of the builders that do it are building huge DH type things that I'm not into. Was excited about the possible SWD custom frame, until Steve died. I'd love to have Curtlo or the brothers Sycip do up something burly and slack custom with a 5" Ventana rear end, but not really in the cards.
