Mountain Biking - New Origin8 Space Bar on my mountain

Just got these new bars on my mountain bike. Haven't gotten to hit the trails yet because it's cold and raining today, but just around the neighborhood and yard they feel a lot better. Most importantly, I have a lot more leverage to pull the front of the bike up. Gary Fishers have such long top tubes and I'm not the strongest guy ever, I have always had trouble getting the front wheel over obstacles.

I think I'm going to order one of these for my Trek fx7500 that gets 1000 miles a month. bye bye flat/riser bars!

Yeah, I ordered one not 5 minutes after I read your review!

Oh, and the trek bike only sees that many miles for the summer months :) and the miles have slowly been shifting towards my fixed gear for commuting... mountain biking is for the cold months :)

i have the same origin8 bars on my voodoo 29er and i love them espesially on a rigid bike it eliminated nearly all wrist pain

Be careful saying you have more leverage. I once posited that I had more leverage and could put down more force with bar ends, and no number of logical explanations, statics diagrams, or lever arm analysis would convince a large group of BFers that I was not only wrong, but undeserving of my engineering education.

I had space bars on my rigid mt bike til I read that some folks have broken theirs jra on mtbr. (do a "space bar" search on mtbr) They're also listed on the origin8 site as "urban" bars. Take that with a grain of salt. They were only on the bike three weeks before I swapped them out with some misfit fubar's. They're a lot more burlier than the space bars. Another alternative is the groovy luv handles but there's a lead time on those.
I still have the space bars and I might transfer them onto my commuter. They're pretty ergo-comfy but I'd rather have peace of mind when I'm riding on singletrack.

You've convinced me. I'll pick up one of those when I get the cranks replaced on my hybrid. Pretty much the only problem I have with the bike is the flat bar and wrist pain.

It's not so much the leverage as it is that you shift your CG aft with the space bars, which takes some of the load off the front wheel. You're not applying greater force to the front of the bike but because you're sitting further back it takes a lower force on the handlebars the get the front wheel up.

Origin8 components and frames are a great bargain. If you're looking for the "right" geometry, you can order two or three of these for the cost of other "name brand" bars.

Careful on your negations. I've read (with regard to the On One Mary) that the bar actually feels more forward than one would suspect because the bar actually sweeps forward quite a bit before it comes back. It depends on how far out you grip as to how far back you sit.

It appears by the pic's though...that Mary sweeps forward but doesn't quite make up the return distance. The Spacebar sweeps back a bit more.

The FuBar sweeps back even more. There is less of a forward sweep and they are a bit wider.

Clipless on the right side, flat on the left will still allow you to look cool by dabbing the foot in the slide

Are those pauls thumbies? I'm curious about how they are positioned.... on top of the bars? how do you change gears?

OH i forgot to mention that i did have to get a slightly shorter stem when i switched from my straight bars to my space bar you might not have to but i did to make it feel comfortable

Well I put my Space Bar on tonight... and my brake cable housings need to be a little bit longer. :/

Got the longer cables on, and woohoo is that a nice bar. I'll be taking it out on longer rides this week, but around the neighborhood I could feel a big difference in hand position. Much, much more comfy.
