Utility Cycling - Home-built xtracycle - Aluminum frame?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I came across a pretty decent candidate front bike for an the homebuilt xtracycle project I've been wanting to build. The frame is a GT mountain bike frame & it's aluminum. Am I asking for trouble thinking of building an xtracycle with aluminum? (I assume I don't need to weld anything....'cause I don't TIG weld!) The rear of the bike would be a steel rear triangle from a dual suspension bike....I hope.

Also, I assume that I would *not* want a suspension fork, right?

The bike I'm thinking of may be a good parts bike to strip for other projects, even if it's not good for this...

Alu should be fine if you build it right. My first longtal is alu with steel rear triangle.

I had a GT alu MTB. Can not remember why I decided not to use it for a longtail. I`ll tell you Iif I do later.

I suggest no suspension, fork or other.

well, this is one I found at a thrift store & first thought I might pick up for parts. the frame is actually a nice frame & i could buy the bike, sell the frame, make a few bucks & have all the parts I wanted. I figured it'd be easier to start out with a super-cheap steel frame & solid fork.

I figure if my Rans Dynamik, which is made of butted 7005 aluminum can carry a rack and panniers and not have compromised handling even under load, I figure that your homemade xtracycle project should work. So aluminum can make for a sweet handling SUB.

thanks. potentially moot point now as I've 1. learned the GT frame I have is actually a frame worth hanging onto to build a good MTB from & 2. I answered an ad in the local CL for a free Schwinn Frontier MTB frame (actually the whole bike less wheels)...so, now the question is which of the two styles of rear dual suspension bikes I'll use as a donor....looks like the one I'll use may be aluminum.....
