Road Cycling - One leg longer?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I've only recently started riding in my old cycling shoes again after hacking around in running shoes for a couple years (just commuting), and I'm experiencing the strange sensation that I'm reaching far more with my right leg than my left. It's either because one leg is longer, my hamstrings are tighter on one leg, or my right foot is much further forward on the pedal.
I've checked the cleats, and they appear to be positioned the same on both shoes, but could the shoes be slightly different? How do you know if one leg is longer? :(

sit on something high enough to let your legs dangle, then get some one else to look.
Do you limp? if not then your body has compensated for the difference. And the best thing to do is get a BROOKS saddle and let it absorb the difference.
I was about 38 years old the first time a tailor told me that one of my legs is shorter than the other. Turns out that I have the same problem with my arms! I never knew it. Go buy an expensive pair of pants and ask the tailor. :-)

I use a shim under my left cleat.
