our canadian ISPs suck really bad. Rogers high speed and Bell Sympatico both are decently fast with up to 1000kbytes/s DL, but it's $60/mo for that and a monthly limit of 60~95GB/mo limit with extra charges if you exceed it.
I, however, have a 300kbytes/s no monthly limit ISP called Acanac.
trade off of speed or no monthly limit... sucks.

US ISPs, instead of expanding bandwidth/reducing latency, are starting to charge subscribers by the byte. They are also looking into how UK ISPs use Phorm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phorm), NebuAd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NebuAd), and other highly intrusive ad servers to inject ads. This is why some subscribers complain to sites about having ads on them, even with a sub fee -- the ads are not from the actual Web site, but placed by the ISP to earn cash.
Want wireless Internet access in the US? You are even worse off. Most will give you 2-3 gigs a month and throttle, or start charging hefty fees.
In the past 3 years, the US has gone from one of the most well-connected countries to one of the worst, with Europe and Asia passing by, bandwidth wise.
Especially Japan. For Americans who want a high end cellphone, this (http://www.htc.com/www/product/shift/overview.html) is as good as you are going to get without importing one. Compare that to a middle of the line Japanese cellphone.

There's nothing novel about routers. It does, however, mean that an entire building is locked into the same service provider, which is good from a cost standpoint, but not as good for competitiveness.
The real advantage is the high population density. It's 31/km^2 in the US versus 337/km^2 in Japan. That makes the per person cost of running new cable much lower.
