I'm an attic noob here. In before this house I always had vaulted ceilings, apartments or good old concrete roof. Every day, few times a day, I hear noises coming from the attic. I know is the AC conduits or differences in air pressure but it's driving me crazy. I keep thinking there could be somebody in there, looking at us through the vents. Sometimes I open the access hatch and take a look. As usual, there's nothing there.

How do you cope with attic noises?

you sir, have paranoia.

differences in temperatures between outside and inside causes creaking.
me, I have mice in my ceiling, they cause a lot of ruckus during the night some times.

I just toss up some body parts that I am done with, and that satisfies them usually. Mine prefer organs and toes.

Put more insulation in the attic and you won't be bothered by the sounds those zombies are making...

Don't worry, it's just ceiling cat...

I could use a few ceiling cats myself.

my regular house cats don't seem to be able to catch any mice, especially the ones in the ceiling.

The noises can sound just like footsteps. Back in the early 70's the wife and I lived in a real old farmhouse in Swanton, Ohio. The gravity furnace was a monster looking thing in the basement that creaked and groaned especially in the quiet of the night. I would have bet my right arm many times I would hear footsteps across the floors in the middle of the night. Some actually were so real sounding that I was waiting for the "intruder" (ghost or whatever) to walk in the room. We slept downstairs in a small room because the second floor was not heated. One of those small floor registers cut in whereas the rising warm air from the first floor was "supposed" to heat the second floor.

But anyway we had to move our bed downstairs into the parlor room because of the cold. The footsteps we would hear was the floorboards expanding whenever the furnace would come on. It was gravity so it never made any noise. Except for the footsteps.

+1 on ceiling cat. :)

Or it might be a homeless person living in your attic.

Could be this cute little fella' and his friends...especially since you live in FL and certainly if you have any fruit trees nearby...

How do you cope with attic noises?

Randomly fire a shotgun through the ceiling.
The same way one deals with flies and moths.

Does it sound like creaks, bangs, or bumps, or more like scratching or scurrying? If you think you have mice, it's easy to tell when you go up there and look, there will be crap everywhere, stuff will be chewed up, and it will stink.

If, like me, you have an occasional squirrel in the attic, you might find a 1/2 eaten pecan sitting in the chairs you have stored up there. :innocent:

I found a squirrel mummy whilst in the attic getting holiday decorations down.

I think I'm going to have to camp out with the air rifle in my attic. Go all commando on that little furry f'er when he/she/it shows up.....maybe I can place some pecans on the chair as bait.

I do hear scratching in my ceiling, but I don't have an attic, and no access to the ceiling space where I hear the noise from. It drives me nuts! I might go the shotgun route.

My dad got a cheapo paintball gun for Christmas for the sole purpose of knocking out squirrels that wreck his back porch. Christmas morning, we quickly discovered how wildly inaccurate the thing is, which of course made it that much more fun. "oops, I missed the fence, it'll wash off the neighbor's house, right?"

Probably just some paranormal activity, nothing to worry about until it starts throwing things at you.

If they come out of the attic and write on the wall paper, ya might wanna pay attention.

plus you can attach a tube to the inevitable hole in the roof and use it to collect rainwater.

Its obviously a ghost coming to haunt your dreams. I bet it gets lonely and boring up there in the attic.

Not if there's some junk in the trunk. :innocent:

Of course, if there's more than one ghost, that could be what the noises are.

Wha? What's a ghost with junk in da trunk going to do to amuse themselves.

That's probably it. There's more than one ghost. They're having a coke party upstairs.

It's probably a human.

Take off your clothes and shake body parts toward the places you suspect they are watching you from. It will either scare them off or motivate them to speed up their efforts to come and eat you.

Either way, the problem is solved relatively quickly.

Dude, get outta my head.

Spirits of the dead are noisy like that.

Or maybe a ex or 2's skeletons rattling around in your closet.
