I'm undertaking the '100 pushups in 6 weeks' program but I am noticing substancial toe soreness (mainly the big toe) when I flex it back a little (doing normal things) it hurts heaps. I have tried to combat this by wearing shoes when I perform the pushups but still get the pain. Can anyone help?

Make sure that your hands are square with your shoulders. Your feet should not be supporting a lot of weight. Definately wear some sort of stiff shoe. You could even wear your cycling shoes since they should not bend at the toe anyway. I will do incline push-ups on a bench from time to time by hanging my feet off the other side and laying my shinns on the bench. This way your feet are relaxed and most of the weight is on your hands.
Good luck on hitting the 100
I haven't had this problem, but perhaps you could try doing them barefoot with your feet on a couch cushion or pillow? You'd want the cushion to be up against a wall or some immovable item so that you don't slip around while trying to do it.
My calves/ankles are very inflexible. This means barefoot or in sneakers I either overstretch my toes trying to bnd them back or just plain hurt my toes trying to stay on tiptoe.
Options:
A. stretch calves and toes
B. use shoes/boots stiff enough to support tiptoe position.
C. support at insteps or ankles with bench/roll/pillow
D. Don't do pushups. Many exercises are better anyway, just require some equipment.

I know that feeling ... and I don't have to do pushups to experience it.
I've got severe arthritis in that joint.
