This morning as I left my village on my bike, my neighbours passed me in their car, also heading in to Edinburgh. (They drive to an area of the West End just outside the parking restrictions and walk the last 1/2 mile or so.
Then, while climbing on the cycle path on the north side of the Forth Road Bridge, my usual cycling buddy (our I T manager) tooted his horn as he passed me in his car on the way to work (he has a meeting elsewhere later today)
When I came into town, I passed my neighbours walking from their car at the West End, and when I cycled into the underground garage at the office, my friends car wasn't ther.
To put this into perspective. The trip from home to the office is about 13 miles. Took me this morning 57 minutes, including all the stop starts where the cycle path cuts across roads etc, and also for stopping at red lights(I'm a bit of a traditionalist)
If I had taken the route the cars take (the dual carriageway), I save 1/2 a mile and about 10 minutes (fewer stops and longer stretches when into my cadence)
The traffic wasn't bad today, as I couldn't see any hold ups.
Surveys always say for sub 5 mile journeys the bike is king, but i think even for this sort of country to suburban to city centre route, there's a lot to be said for the bike. :D
