General Cycling Discussion - Great Job Opportunity For Cyclist

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SOUGHT:

Bicycle Colorado, a statewide non-profit group working to improve
conditions for bicycling, seeks an Executive Director. The successful
applicant will possess a college degree, fundraising skills, non-profit or
business management experience, advocacy or organizing experience, public
relations skills and bicycling experience. The Executive Director will work
with board, staff, volunteers, members and public to achieve Bicycle
Colorado's mission to promote and encourage bicycling, increase safety,
improve conditions and provide a voice for cyclists in Colorado.

The Bicycle Colorado office will be located in Denver as of March 1st,
2002. Salary will be based upon the skills and experience of the final
candidate. A more detailed job description is available at

Why?

The current Exec, Martha Rostowski, has accepted a big-time position:
She has served as our
Executive Director for 7 years, working with energy and conviction to lead
a successful organization.

Martha's leadership qualities have not gone unnoticed. This week, she was
officially hired to manage the national campaign to improve the bicycling
components of TEA-21, the federal transportation funding bill, due for
reauthorization in 2003. So, "Martha goes to Washington" in May to lead the
BikeTEA campaign. The campaign is a collaborative effort of IMBA, the
League, Rails to Trails Conservancy, the Thunderhead Alliance, National
Center for Bicycling and Walking, the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle
Professionals, Adventure Cycling and Bikes Belong.

and SHE is a cyclist.

However, in a state as large as Colorado - I believe it is 7th largest in USA (I guess about 350 by 250 miles - I will check that later), and with lousy winter weather, and with a need for a state-wide presence, I would guess that an auto would indeed be needed.

Don't be so cynical. There are lot's of qualified cyclists, and this is a totally cyclist controlled group. I.e., I have all the qualifications, personally, including lot's of fund-raising, non-profit management, contact with legislators, etc., etc. There are many like me.

The City of San Diego's bicycle coordinator has been very responsive and effective, even though he personally is afraid to ride his bike in traffic. He also has credibility as a licensed Traffic Engineer and is supported and prodded by a very active and outspoken private not-for-profit cycling advocacy group, the SDCBC.

I've cycled some of the existing trails in Dalbeattie forest v. nice. And as to getting muddy, you should see the state of my road bike after 2 weeks of commuting to work.

But, I don't think my wife would be keen on me dropping quite so much of my salary.

You have hit on the main thing (the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.)

"...he is personally afraid to ride his bike in traffic."

This can be good, or bad...either his fear translates into action, inaction, or...

...urban bike paths...

(Note: urban bike paths, such as exist in Atlanta, are not to be confused with the type that exist in some areas, such as where Denver lives. Many of our Atlantan bike paths are formulas for cyclist extinction, no exaggeration.)
