Pack snow on your tent to block the wind, and bring a large sleeping bag rated to 0 or less, and put inside of it a tight sleeping bag also rated to 0 or less. You'll wake up toasty friggen warm and happy. Cold weather camping can be a lot of fun.

I usually head into the mountains and dig a snow cave.

That sounds fun. I'd have to go up by Taerom to get access to that much snow. :crash:

Built right, it stays 35-40 inside the cave. Awesome on a bitterly cold night.

It's not too often that we have enough snow for a snow cave. But we did get 8-10 inches piled up on us on the night this photo was taken.

I haven't camped in the winter in a while. Need some decent equipment (especially sleeping bags) to really enjoy it though. Got caught in a late Fall camping several years ago - and the weather dropped and it snowed on us - and all I had were my lighter (aka cheaper) sleeping bags and some blankets. DID NOT want to step away from the fire that night and make the run to the tent and jump into freezing cold blankets!

The first time I did tent winter camping, it fell to -20. That was fun. Of course, we had 5 people in a 3 person tent, so it was plenty warm. Then we woke up and and snow falling inside the tent.

The coldest I've ever been was one February week in north-central Maine. Holy cow is that cold. I came home and got a sleeping bag rated to -40F which I've uh never used probably even below freezing in the 25 yrs since.

About a foot of snow on top of an ice sheet from the week before. It is now too cold for snow except lake effect.
Excellent XC sking snow though :)

Maybe so until you realize you have to go to the bathroom. For me that is where the fun ends.
Only if you dig on covered wagons.

Maybe I'll head into the mountains this weekend. I have a great bag and a nice bivy bag. I'm going crazy here...
Sounds fun, can I tag along. I'm going to have to go riding this weekend as it is too hot for me to go tramping up mountains at the moment.:D
I haven't done any tramping for several months now though.:o

yeah! Let's go, gnome! I'd bring some gaiters, big fuzzy mittens, big puffy jacket, and a lot of food.

I say we all agree then once there we can jam UA's tent shut, then throw him in the river and see if he can pull a Houdini. Who's with me?

it's cool enough now, the mosquitoes should be at a minimum.

That's what everybody there has been telling me. Down to 28F Saturday night in the Alexandria area. I can't wait. Hopefully everything thing doesn't shut down because it's too cold.

So does everybody else in Louisiana.
Edit: There are only 2 things I don't miss about living there.
1) Mosquitoes
2) Humidity
